IC: Evan Tierra
Evan thought for a moment about their choices, and then slapped his hand to his forehead. "We have a third option: a portal through Space." Evan said, smiling. "We'd need to be in a private place, as I am sure it'd really stick out, but since Jenny and I have been there, we can just zip to the Ruins of Abundance!" Evan then struck a triumphant pose. "How does that sound?"

-==IC: Colleen Llyan - Prosthetics Lab, Hau'oli City==-
The antics of Skye and Landon brought a small smile to Colleen's face, though it vanished when Gavin began to mention about the odd-looking people. She scanned out for any kind of odd auras, but nothing came up in the direct vicinity, so it seemed like they hadn't reached the lab yet, if they were anything to worry about. Still... when Ryan volunteered to stay with Gavin and Colleen to go with Skye, the aura wielder nodded in agreement. "Seems like a good idea to me." Colleen said with a slightly forced smile. In any other case she would've leaped at the chance anyway, but as it stood, she wanted to be there just in case something bad went down. Besides, Colleen spared a glance to the cursing Gavin, who was using words she hadn't even heard before. Definitely a good idea to be away from him right for the moment.
-==IC: Corey Bouchard - Traveling, Poni Island==-
"Sounds like he did, which is one of the upsides to what all happened," Corey said with a wry smile. "An arm for an arm, I believe the saying is?" There was a brief moment of reflection as they mulled over what Sonja said at the end, however. "Yeah... we can always hope that things would get better, but in the end we still might need to take matters into our own hands at times." Corey said, but then fell quiet as they continued to walk. There were certainly questions to be asked about Sonja's thoughts on Ryan, because she had seemed more introspective about the situation; but they had a feeling if there was anything, it might be a touchy subject for now. So, they decided to bookmark the conversation for later.
"So," They cleared their throat as they looked around. "How much further do you think it is to the cave? We've not really seen much signs of anything other than empty fields... it's a bit eerie, if you ask me."
-==IC: Chloe Hikari/Ray Hakuda/Lucia Zyther - Heahea City, Akala Island==-
Chloe nodded with a grin as Esen suggested the party and Kyle arrived. For a brief moment, she happily thought of a nice party with everyone after they got back from their respective missions - something she hadn't been able to enjoy for the past few years. However, her thoughts were interrupted by something even better; an early birthday present from Kyle. Chloe gasped and held her hands to her mouth briefly as she took hold of the box. A glint of a ring shone in the light as she took hold of the box and gently opened it. As Kyle said, the necklace didn't look super fancy all things considered, but the thought meant a lot to her. After she took a moment to fasten the necklace around her neck, she briefly and gently gave Kyle a hug, a giant grin on her face as she stepped back and wiped away some tears.
"Congrats on beating my girlfriend to the first proper gift in years," Chloe said with a hint of amusement intermingled with being genuinely happy for the gift. "Seriously though, this means a lot, thank you Kyle, I appreciate it a lot!"
****
Meanwhile, Ray laughed at the suggestions the kids made for his theoretical magician outfit - not the worst idea either, he had to admit. He was about to add his own thoughts when the hugs began. Ray grinned as he kept quiet, if there was anything to this, it was best to let them figure it out on their own. Luckily, the group themselves provided a perfect distraction to keep himself from making snarky comments. "I seem to remember Chloe here having thoughts about wanting to join in one of the Battle Royals when she'd heard about it from her teacher. She'd constantly go on and on about how the battling and costumes and names and everything were - eh, 'Prismatic Savior'?"
"I did not!" Chloe retorted with flushed cheeks. She opened her mouth to protest more as she saw a figure in her peripheral vision.
"Nah," A smug voice sounded from her side as a woman with shorter orange hair stepped more into view of the group gathered. "She totally did, I can confirm. She can't deny it with me, ya know?" Olivia said with a tone that suggested that she was delighted to be able to tease her girlfriend. Chloe groaned as she buried her face in her hands to hide how it was reddening with each passing second, threatening to match Jenny's hair as time passed.
"Well, this answers your question, Ellen!" Chloe said in an attempt to deflect and change the subject. "This is..." There was a small pause as Chloe glanced over at Olivia, though the latter girl shook her head as if to answer an unasked question. "This is my girlfriend, Olivia! Some of you have met her before, but yeah, for those who haven't, here she is!"
"Alola." Olivia said in response as she raised a hand in greeting to Ellen and Lucia in particular. Lucia returned the greeting briefly before she continued to stare at her phone expectantly. "Everyone else somewhere different this time around?"
"Yeah, we had to split up to cover more ground; our group'll be Ellen and Esen here." Chloe explained as she grinned at Olivia. "I'm so glad to see you again; are you feeling better now?"
"Yup, much better. Heather's been doing great too, look," Olivia said as she sent out a Pikachu that seemed to be brimming with energy. "I think she's adjusting to the Alolan climate very well--" A crash behind the group prompted Olivia to groan and start to run. "Oh for the love of, I told ya to stay still!"
"What's this?" Chloe asked as she ran off after Olivia, only to discover a yellow ball of anger hissing at the group. The cat-like Pokémon was unfamiliar, but seemed to be calmed by Olivia - who seemed to be the only one that the cat wasn't hissing at. When her girlfriend gave a shrug of being unsure, Chloe pulled out her Pokédex and attempted to scan the unknown Pokémon. However, her attempts were thwarted by the cat seeming to sense the Pokédex's presence and running behind some shipping crates.
"... Give me a moment." Olivia looked unamused as she sent out a Poké Ball that contained her trusted partner Amethyst. "Bring them back here, ya?" Moments passed before the cat was dragged back and looked just as unamused as Olivia currently did. "Right, scan them now while Am has a hold." Without any further prompting, Chloe scanned the Pokémon and got a result way down at the end of the Alolan section. "Zeraora, eh? Well, they already seem to have an owner, I couldn't catch them when I first encountered them in Malie City the other day. They really wanted to come here, though this is the first time I've seen them this upset at people."
-==IC: Marie Homura - Ecruteak City, Johto==-
Crunch, crunch, crunch, The sound of leaves under Marie's feet brought many memories to mind unbidden. Things from a time and place that were both long gone. Tournament wins that seemed so long ago now. Good and bad times from recently. Memories of a girl who seemed to grow more distant with each interaction. Marie raised a hand to wipe away the wet tears from her face, but they didn't seem to want to stop. After what felt like ages, Marie finally wiped her face one final time and noticed a young girl and a Cubone staring at the pond in the middle of the park. Before she could think about what she was doing, the blonde had already begun to walk in Aori's direction.
"Hey," Marie said with a gentle voice that betrayed the fact that she had been crying not moments before, a kind smile on her face as she took a seat nearby and looked over the pond. It felt peaceful in a way that felt almost wrong to her, but it was still calming. After all that Aori had been through, Marie could understand why she was here. She wasn't sure what exactly to say at the moment, so she kept quiet until she looked over at Aori again. "Are you cold?"

IC: Lohe Mahina - Heahea City, Dimensional Research Lab
After a night of making calls and redirecting his scheduled boat trip, Lohe and company had reached the laboratory of Professor Burnet, their first stop on searching for the lost Skull Grunts. The scientists had been in a hustle when they arrived, trying to keep the place working with the threat of apocalypse on the horizon. Perhaps in hopes that their work may somehow contribute to the effort. Lohe was speaking with Burnet, whilst feeling quite out of place. Lohe was not what one would call a tech expert. He could work his way around a phone, and kept up with general knowledge the average twenty something would know about tech as the decades passed. But he never felt at home being surrounded by the types of screens and computers that surrounded him now. Going by himself would already leave him feeling out of place. Bringing three members of Team Skull with him only increased the feeling. “So, yeah. We need to know if and when Cosmog is creating Ultra Wormholes,” Lohe said as he finished recounting the previous day’s events to Professor Burnet. “Yeah, science chick,” Bully interjected when Lohe had finished his explanation. “What the scary fed man said. Help us out or you’ll be subject to the full might of Team Skull!” Out of the corner of his eye, Lohe saw Trigger poking at a piece of expensive looking equipment. His prodding dislodged some sort of antenna, resulting in a warning box flashing on one of the many screens in the room. As the impotent grunt scrambled to grab the antenna and reattach it, the final member of their crew leaned against the table, scrolling on his phone with an almost bored expression on his face. But it was not lost on Lohe that Snake’s eyes occasionally flitted over to the many screens, taking in the data in silence. Lohe could feel his age as he listened to the Skull Grunts. He may not be a tech guy, but the subtle creaking of plastic and metal and the not so subtle moans of a scientist watching valuable data reduced to garbage, Lohe knew it would only be moments before Trigger broke something relevant to their search. He yelled out to Snake. "Could you please take him outside, before he breaks something important?" “Sheesh. You worry too much, fed man.” Snake made no effort to hide his yawn. “We had a deal, remember? You can’t just kick us out whenever we get on your nerves. But Trigger, maybe we should keep our hands to ourselves, no?” With a frustrated sigh, Trigger let the antenna clatter to the table and stepped back, raising his hands. “Yo, that thing fell apart on its own. Alolan government cutting your budget? This is why you don’t rely on the big man’s deep pockets.” During Trigger’s tirade, Snake subtly snapped a picture of one of the large screens with his phone. None of the scientists seemed to notice. Speaking of not noticing, Bully saw that Professor Burnet, the boss lady, seemed largely unconcerned with Trigger messing with her equipment. Lohe was about to argue with Snake when he heard Bully snap his fingers in front of Burnet’s eyes.“Yo! You gonna help us or not?” the Skull grunt questioned. “Oy. Leave her alone,” Lohe said, snapping at Bully. “She was just about to help us, right?” Lohe said with a subtle glint in his eyes. “Could you please hand over what you’ve got on Ultra Wormhole activity since last night?” A glint appeared in Burnet’s eye for a brief moment. “Yeah, sure. It won’t be a problem.” She walked over a partition in the room and said “Let me just get that for you.” She returned a few moments later with a tablet device which she handed over to Lohe. Lohe fumbled with the device a bit until he could copy and save the data onto his own device. He looked it over before handing it back to Burnet. The professor’s research had been on his superior’s radar for quite some time. One of them had gotten a meeting like this and made sure that things would go smoothly in case someone like Lohe showed up. “Thank you. If you could keep us posted on any Ultra Wormholes that open up, that would be great,” Lohe said to Burnet. “Come on. Let’s go.” Bully looked from Lohe to Burnet in confusion at what just transpired. Before he could say anything, Snake spoke up. “Well, that was easy.” The Skull leader moved to look at Lohe’s device over his shoulder. “So what exactly did we find out?” Lohe looked down at his device and looked it over again, just to be sure that he understood it right. “There weren’t any Ultra Wormholes in Alola last night, at least after the arrival of the Cosmog at the Lake of the Moone.” He put the device away, and considered the situation. “Meaning it was a regular teleport that took your friends away. Given its relative weakness and unfamiliarity to this world, it probably didn’t leave Alola.” It was a little bit of a stretch meant to assuage their fears. But not totally unreasonable either. “So your friends are probably still in Alola, just out of cell range,” he said, glancing at Snake’s phone, still in his hand. Snake had been on his phone almost the entire night, waiting for a response from the others. “Well that’s comforting,” Snake muttered. “At least we know we don’t have to search everywhere between here and Galar. It still gets us no closer to finding our friends.” “I wouldn’t say this trip was completely worthless,” Bully said with a wink, sticking something into his pockets. “Hey!” One of the scientists cried out, pointing an accusatory finger at Bully. “He’s trying to steal the atmospheric pressure gauges!” Bully swore, looking to Lohe and Snake for help. But it was Trigger who came to his rescue. “Yo, homies! Something weird’s happening down there!” Trigger pointed out the window. Lohe was about to bark after Bully, but the tone of Trigger’s voice caught his attention. He walked over to Trigger and looked out the window. Looking down from the third floor window, he saw what Trigger alluded to, and his blood boiled. The congregation assembled beneath them, he’d seen their uniforms before. The sacrifices. The transformations. It all came back to Lohe. “We’re leaving,” Lohe said, his voice an icy chill. He turned towards the elevator where Bully was. He began walking straight towards Bully, his bloodshot eyes glaring directly at him. “Yo, that’s what I’ve been trying to do!” Bully cried, rapidly pressing the elevator’s call button as Lohe drew closer and closer. “Chill out, man! No need to freak out on me!” “You don’t need to tell me twice,” Trigger said. He paused long enough to flash a gang sign at the scientists. “Peace out.” Snake took the opportunity to snap another picture with his phone before he followed suit. "Leave it." Lohe said, as he walked right past Bully into the now open elevator. He turned around and waited for the others with an unblinking bloodshot stare.

IC: Ellen Burks - Docks, Heahea City “Zeraora, huh?” Ellen looked up at the large cat-like Pokémon, a hint of a sad smile on her face. “Kind of reminds me of Chrono. He was never too comfortable around people, but he started to warm up to me eventually.”
Key phrase being ‘started to,’ Symbio added. Those feline Pokémon are a capricious sort, doing whatever they please.
Ellen let out a sigh. She had been so busy with the Tapu Fini mission and now this new mission on Akala Island that her missing Pokémon had slipped to the back of her mind. But seeing the hissing electric cat brought back all the worries she had buried. Just where was Chrono?
Kneeling down, she extended an arm out towards Zeraora. “Shhh, it’s okay,” she said in a soft voice. “No one here wants to hurt you. We just want to help.”
IC: Bully/Trigger/Snake - Streets, Heahea City The Team Skull crew looked at each other in an uncomfortable silence as they rode the elevator down to the ground floor. Lohe seemed to be in a particularly bad mood, and no one was really sure what had set him off.
Upon exiting the Dimensional Research Building, they saw the crowd Trigger had pointed out. It was not unusual to see such a large crowd, especially in Heahea. From scheduled concerts to impromptu performers hoping to make a quick buck off of the large tourist population, Heahea was known for attracting many people to a single spot. Sure, the hooded cloaks of the people on stage were a little over-the-top, but it certainly seemed to attract the crowd’s attention. Even as Snake and the others stopped to look, several other passerby paused as well, craning their necks to see just what all the fuss was about.
“Yo,” Bully said to his companions. “That guy speaking up there look familiar to anyone else?”
Snake swore under his breath. “He joined Team Skull recently. Right around the time things started getting freaky. And look, that hooded guy standing in the back, second from the left— isn’t that our buddy Dweller?”
“No way, man,” Trigger said, peering closely at the hooded figures. “They’re all Team Skull. Every last one of them. What the hell are they doing here? Pretty lame rap battle if you ask me.”
Yamamoto Aori - Park, Ecruteak City Aori looked over at the woman. Her initial panic at someone addressing her subsided when she recognized who it was. “Hello, Homura-san,” she said, doing her best to force a smile to her face. Her cheeks hurt from the effort and she quickly dropped back to a neutral expression. She tugged at the sleeve of her summer dress, looking back out over the water. “I am a little cold,” she admitted.

IC - Sonja Baron/Madison Hayes - Traveling, Poni Island:
"Well, this island doesn't seem like it's much bigger than Four Island," Sonja said. "Traveling on foot, I'd imagine it'll at least be a few hours before we get there. Although if we had Pokémon that could f--" With a look of sudden exasperation on her face, Sonja came to an immediate stop. "How many times am I going to run into this exact situation before I think about this from the start? Sophia!" The Second Child stopped, turning to Sonja with a quizzical look on her face. "Hold on there for a second!"
Once she and Corey had caught up with Hayes, Sonja pulled a Poké Ball from her belt. "I'll readily admit I'm an idiot for this one," she said. "I don't know about you two, but I have three flying Pokémon. More than enough for us to cut travel time on this trip down to nothing."
"That is not a bad idea," Hayes said. "My only concern would be drawing attention from Missing Zero, although I think we are far enough away from the coast by now to mostly avoid that."
"Then let's do it," Sonja said. She sent out Neith, Athena, and Ares, moving to climb onto Ares's back as Hayes took to Neith's. Sonja looked between the remaining Tranquill, who was relatively small, and Corey, who was not small. Athena herself was eyeing Corey with a dubious look that suggested she was in the middle of doing some intense mental math. "Er . . . I guess make that two fliers. But either way, Ares can carry two of us without any issue, unless you've got your own?"
IC - Gavin Braner - Prosthetics Lab, Hau'oli City:
"No, please, by all means, feel free to go with--oh forget it," Gavin said as the rest of the group left, leaving him alone with Ryan. He rested his head on his hand, pressing two of his fingers against his temple. He glanced over at Ryan. "I'm gonna be blunt, I'm not interested in talking about how I got here."
IC - Skye Hall/Landon Hall - Prosthetics Lab, Hau'oli City:
As she closed the door behind them and followed after Landon, who had started to head further down the hall, Skye could not help but give her brother a concerned eye. "So, uh, Gavin's going to be fine after that, right?" she asked.
"Oh, yeah--trust me, that's about how it goes for everyone," Landon said. "Once he's got his new arm up and running, he'll be in a better mood. Promise."
"Alright, I'll trust you on this," Skye said. She rubbed the back of her head, looking around. Every so often they would pass by an open doorway; in many of these, the rooms beyond contained a number of filing cabinets as well as desks were different parts were in the process of being worked on. Several of them were currently occupied by mechanics who hardly acknowledged them as they passed, though one or two gave a friendly nod or a wave.
At the end of the hall, they came to a door requiring a keycard. Landon swiped his card through this, revealing a concrete stairwell leading downward, which he started down. With a confused look at Colleen, Skye followed. For several moments their footsteps echoed against the walls as they descended. It occurred to her that her brother had been mostly silent through this walk, which was--to put it mildly--unusual for him.
"So . . ." Skye said. "I take it this must be pretty serious business, huh?"
"You could say that," Landon said. As they came to the bottom of the stairwell, at the start of another hallway that appeared to lead to a vault of some kind, he stopped and looked at Skye and Colleen, laughing awkwardly as a sense of realization became evident on his face. "Oh, you know what? I just realized how creepy this whole thing must look. Sorry about that! Do either of you know much about the mythical Pokémon of Alola?"
IC - Esen Windred/Kyle Eston/Levi Alaric - Heahea City, Akala Island:
With the arrival of the others, Kyle did not have much of an opportunity to respond to Chloe outside of a smile. As they all gathered around, he peered over the others' heads at the buildings that composed the Heahea skyline. Briefly, he wondered about whether they should just stick together and tackle each problem one at a time, but he forced himself to shake the thought almost immediately. Time was of the essence, and he didn't imagine Ford or Hayes would be very pleased with them going off-script here.
Although, the presence of the hissing, angry ball of yellow fur in front of them made him somewhat question the decision. The creature's demeanor was certainly enough to scare Levi, who moved to hide behind Kyle.
Esen watched the Pokémon curiously. With Ellen, Chloe, and Olivia working to pacify it, she shifted closer to Kyle, bumping his shoulder. "I think we should probably split here," she said. "This Pokémon might not like groups, so fewer people around it might help calm it down."
"I--are you sure?" Kyle asked, looking at her in surprise. "This thing looks like it could go feral any moment."
"Yeah, I'm sure," Esen said. "Go on--we'll be fine."
"If you say so," he said. "Just . . . Stay safe, alright?" Esen nodded. "Alright . . . Well, um . . . See you later . . ." He gave her a shy wave before stepping away, ushering Levi with him. "Chloe, we're heading out--let us know if you need any back-up with things here." He nodded to Ray as he opened his map and started to navigate. Noting Lucia was distracted, he gently tapped her shoulder as well, gesturing that it was time to go. When they had started away, he glanced at her. "Everything okay?"
IC - Esen Windred - Heahea City, Akala Island:
As the Tapu Lele group headed out, Esen turned her attention back to the Pokémon in front of them. She looked at Olivia. "Any idea at all who this guy could belong to?"
IC - Ethan Worth - Ferry to Ula'ula Island:
"Teleportation, huh?" Ethan struck a more subdued pose, dramatically closing his eyes and rubbing his chin. "Avoid a long walk . . . Bypass a long climb . . . Severely cut down on the time to get to our destination . . . I like it!" He nodded, throwing a hand in the direction that he assumed was south. "Very well! Let us teleport to the Ruins of Abundance and complete our duty of saving Tapu Bulu from its own inaction!"
As soon as he said the last part, the ground rumbled beneath the group's feet, though only for a brief moment. Ethan looked down, and then gave his companions a sheepish grin. "I don't suppose Tapu Bulu is one for jokes at its expense?"
IC - ? - Heahea City, Akala Island:
A man came upon the stage. The hooded figures held him tight, dunking his head into a barrel of shining light. When he emerged, his face so bright, they released him back to show his freedom from plight. And when he spoke, they knew they, too, could be made right.
A crowd, the crowd, what a wonderful loud crowd. The first convert had left them curious and wowed, and with the next and the next they became just that much more cowed toward his cause. It was a simple trick, three steps, wash, and repeat--find a mark, meet their eye, wash them in the salvation of the waters, let them join the stark raving crowd as the brainwash took hold. Such a simple trick, so easy to pick and choose and yet he was left to muse how such could end in failure whence he had tried before.
Oh well; that was then, this was now. No distractions or deviations here to mark sweat upon his brow.
"Yes, come one, come all! Let us dash your fears against the wall!" he called, his voice booming through the speakers. With each passing moment as more and more folk came to feed the congregation, becoming blind to the reality of situation before them, he could fill his zone of influence increasing. The man grinned hungrily. "Grab your family, grab your friends--let us show you the way, again and again!"
A handful of people in the crowd did not seem wowed. The man's expression did not shift even as he seemed to start addressing them directly, his words like poison in the air that had an immediate effect on some of these individuals. An older man dropped to the ground, clutching his chest and lost in the sea of bodies that did not even seem to notice. Yet another onlooker became overcome with a sudden illness, beginning to vomit into a trashcan nearby.
"The Great Eater is nothing to fear--in fact, it offers you freedom now and here!" he said. "I am its speaker within the night--let me be your guiding light!"

IC: Lohe Mahina - Heahea City
The abominable sun bore down on Lohe Mahina, he’d been up all night, and he was needing a top up on blood. Lohe was not in the best mood before he saw a clear reminder of what was happening in Po Town. His companions only confirmed for Lohe what was going on. The brainwashed state of the Skull Grunts in Po Town was being exported outside. Lohe considered whether he should do something for them, his brain helpfully reminding him how he abandoned them before.
Something was happening, Lohe couldn’t immediately tell what. So Lohe focused his ears on the man on the stage.
A bomb went off in Lohe’s eardrums. He cuffed his ears as he dropped to his knees, shouting in agony. The sound waves vibrated through his entire body, rupturing tissue as they bounced through his body. Tapu Lele’s curse held his body together, as his organs screamed in a dissonant chorus.
It was a quieter, sharper noise than what he was used to, but his entire body was telling his brain that Guzzlord was tearing them apart again. And his brain believed the impossibility. He had to get away, but his brain couldn’t focus enough to crawl, let alone stand. He was barely able to grasp his staff before he began to vomit blood.
Nosferatu shot out of his Poke Ball unbidden. Seeing Lohe like this filled Nosferatu with a dread he only knew when the pair returned to the vampire’s manse. His ears had picked up the evil sound. Rage swelled up in Nosferatu. With wings laced with poison, he shot straight toward the speaker, intent on silencing his hateful sound.

IC: Bully/Trigger/Snake - Streets, Heahea City “Yo, Lohe!” Trigger cried. “You alright, man?” It was a rhetorical question. The government agent was on his knees, throwing up blood. He was most definitely not alright.
A moment later Bully collapsed writhing in pain. Then Snake keeled over and vomited both this morning’s breakfast and last night’s dinner. Trigger felt his skin grow clammy as a cold sweat broke out all over. Suddenly his head felt like it was in a cloud, and all the sounds around him grew muffled. All but the speaker’s sermon, which rang loud and clear.
“What the hell? This is some pretty nasty food poisoning, man.” Trigger couldn’t make sense of it all. Not with that ringing in his head. All he knew was that he felt terrible. And yet no one around them seemed to notice that anything was wrong at all.
That was when Lohe’s Crobat burst out of its ball and flew towards the speaker. Trigger was all for making a ruckus, and the man speaking seemed to have more or less hijacked a sect of Team Skull. Even still, attacking the man in broad daylight, in the middle of a crowd, seemed unusually rash for Lohe. Unless . . .
“Is that guy . . . causing us all to feel sick somehow . . . ?”
Bully fumbled for a Pokéball, sending out his Turtonator. “I don’t know what’s causing this, but that man up there is bad news. Get ready, Kino. Today we fight for the heart of Team Skull!”
Trigger nodded and pulled out a Pokéball of his own. “You heard him, Tokahiko!” he cried. “Use Rock Blast!” The Alolan Golem grinned as he took aim at the man on stage and rapid-fired a barrage of boulders.
IC: Ryan Sanders - Prosthetics Lab, Hau’oli City “Oh.” Ryan fell into an uncomfortable silence punctuated by the scowl on Gavin’s face. For a moment Ryan considered running to catch up with the others, but they were already long gone and he didn’t want to risk getting lost.
Biting his lip, Ryan did his best to avoid eye contact with Gavin. He stared at the floor, the walls, the machinery, anything but the man who clearly didn’t want him here. He had done it again. So eager was he to lend a helping hand that he hadn’t stopped to consider if the recipient of his good intentions needed or even wanted his help. It was a hard balance, and he clearly wasn’t close enough to Gavin to know where that line was between being helpful and being a nuisance. If it was Sonja, Ray, or Kyle getting the procedure done, he would feel more comfortable lending his help. But as it was, Ryan had no idea what to do.
Thankfully, at that moment his Pokégear rang. He chanced a glance at Gavin. “Do you mind if I step out for a moment?”
The look Gavin gave him told him he needn’t have asked. Clearly the Rocket agent would love nothing more than to be alone with his scowl and his foul mood.
Stepping into the hallway, Ryan glanced at the caller ID on his Pokégear’s screen. Dahlia? That was unusual. He hadn’t heard from her in months. Intrigued, he answered the call.
“Ryan? Thank Arceus!” Dahlia’s face appeared on the screen, dimly lit by the glow from her Inkay. Her hair was a mess and dark circles under her eyes betrayed her exhaustion, eased only slightly by the relief on her face.
Her unkempt appearance and the dim lighting immediately raised questions in Ryan’s mind. “Dahlia! Are you alright? Where are you?” He stopped himself. There it was again. Just like with Gavin, he had rushed to help without considering if his help was actually wanted. “Sorry,” he said sheepishly. “I shouldn’t just assume you’re in trouble like that. Let me try again. How are you?”
A light chuckle escaped from Dahlia’s lips as she offered him an amused smile. “I’m doing alright, considering. As for where I am, I’m pretty sure this is a small island near Sootopolis.”
“You’re in Hoenn?” Ryan did some quick math. “But if it’s mid-morning here in Alola, then that means—“
“It’s the middle of the night, yes,” Dahlia cut in. “I know. Timezones suck. But I wanted to reach you before you went to sleep, and I wasn’t about to do the math to figure out what time it actually is for you over there. I wanted to let you know that I found Ellen’s Purrloin.” The camera swiveled away and for a moment Ryan saw nothing but darkness. “Marsala, a little light, please?” Dahlia’s Inkay floated onscreen, his glowing spots revealing a small purple cat curled up by a tree.
“Chrono?” Ryan said in surprise. “That’s great! Ellen will be thrilled!”
“That’s not what Jenny thought,” Dahlia said.
“Wait, you talked to Jenny?”
The camera swiveled away from Chrono to show Dahlia’s silhouette. As her Inkay moved to provide light, Ryan saw concern etched in her face. “Maybe I should start at the beginning.”

IC: Ryan Sanders - Prosthetics Lab, Hau’oli City/Dahlia Seaton - Route 126, Hoenn “It all started when I got a call from my Aunt Kiri,” Dahlia explained.
Ryan listened with interest to how one of the street urchins Kiri had been looking after had found Chrono. Evidently Kiri recognized him from Ellen’s time in Sootopolis, so she asked Dahlia if she could help. Dahlia agreed, but she and Klim found the city overrun by Déoza agents working with Instances. It was only after several battles that they managed to make their way to Kiri’s house.
“Déoza must not have liked our meddling in their evil plans,” Dahlia said with a bit of pride in her voice. “They had some sort of Instance that jammed my phone signal, so I couldn’t call anyone. Worse, the Instances followed us to Kiri’s house. So I did what any Envoy of Giratina would have done — I opened a portal to the Distortion World and hid there with Klim, Aunt Kiri, Chrono, and the kids.”
“That’s pretty smart thinking,” Ryan said. “Sounds like your training with Klim has been going well.”
“It’s been tough, but it’s been good.” Dahlia smiled. “I’ve learned a lot about myself these past few months.”
“You seem way more confident,” Ryan said before he could stop himself. He quickly backpedaled. “I mean, not that you weren’t confident before, but—“
“I wasn’t,” Dahlia admitted sheepishly. “I didn’t have a handle on my powers, and some of that was because they were so new, but a lot of it was because I didn’t have confidence in myself. But enough about that. Where was I? We used the Distortion World to escape Sootopolis, and after a bit of trial and error I opened a portal here, to this small island on Route One-twenty-something. My phone had signal again, thankfully, so I started making calls while everyone else made camp.”
“So you called Jenny?”
“Well, first I called Ellen’s father, since last I’d heard Ellen had gone home with him. But he said she’d left with Evan and Jenny. So I told Jenny and she said to talk to you, since you’ve kind of been like Ellen’s guardian this year.”
Ryan frowned. “Why didn’t Jenny just direct you to Ellen herself? She has her own Xtransceiver now.”
“Right.” Dahlia sighed. “That’s where she thought you would know what to do. But Jenny felt like telling Ellen about Chrono now would distract her from her mission.”
“So we should lie to her?”
“Well, I wouldn’t call it a lie, exactly.” In the dim light, Dahlia looked uncomfortable. “It’s more like just not saying anything for now, at least until the mission’s done.” Ryan chewed his lip. Something about this disagreed with him. Evidently his expression wasn’t exactly subtle, because Dahlia immediately got defensive. “Hey, I’m just the messenger here! I’m exhausted and I’ve been up all night playing phone tag! I know it doesn’t seem great, but you have to admit Jenny has a point. This is like, what, Ellen’s second mission with you guys? She’s still new to all this and can’t afford any distractions. Chrono’s safe with me, and that’s what matters.”
“Don’t you think she deserves to know that, at least?” Ryan pinched his brow as he tried to wrap his mind around all this. He simply couldn’t see any good coming from keeping this a secret from Ellen, and he was frankly surprised that Dahlia seemed to be taking Jenny’s side. “From what I hear, you were pretty distracted in Kalos when you found out your Flabébé was missing, until you found out she’d snuck into Ellen’s bag. Shouldn’t we extend the same curtesy to Ellen?”
“That’s why Jenny had me call you,” Dahlia said, an edge creeping into her voice. “She figured you’d know what was best. I’m just trying to help you weigh the options, but if you don’t want my help, you can just figure it out on your own.”
Ryan felt a pit form in his stomach and slowly slid down the wall to sit on the floor. “I’m sorry,” he said in a quiet voice. “I’m not mad at you. I’m just . . . trying to do the right thing. And I know you are, too.”
“No, I’m sorry.” The camera shifted as Dahlia sat down as well. “I’m basically running on fumes at this point. I shouldn’t have gotten so upset. I usually try to leave the fighting to my siblings.”
“Sounds like you’ve had a rough day,” Ryan said, letting his concern show. “Let’s start over. What do you plan to do now that you’re out of Sootopolis?”
“Well, I need to get Kiri and the kids to safety.” Dahlia looked over her device, presumably where her companions slept. “I don’t know where, but I need to bring them somewhere more than just a deserted island. That’s my biggest priority.” She fell silent for a moment, deep in thought. “After that, I don’t know,” she admitted. “As the Hero of Reverse I feel like I should save the city of Sootopolis. But it’s not something I can do on my own.”
“Maybe we can help you.” Ryan offered her a smile. “I’m not sure what we have planned after we save Alola, but that stuff in Sootopolis sounds pretty serious.”
“Maybe.” Dahlia returned the smile. “So, what have you been up to? Jenny didn’t say much other than that you’re all on a mission in Alola.”
“Well, right now we’re getting Gavin a new arm,” Ryan said. “He lost the old one during the Two Island mission.”
Dahlia let her smile slip into a grim look. “I know, I was there. It was that monster McKinley and his creepy Girafarig. If it even was a Girafarig. At this point I feel like it was really just another one of Missing Zero’s puppets or disguises.”
“Right, I forgot you saw that. That . . . must have been hard to watch.” A heavy silence hung between them. “I should probably let you get some sleep,” Ryan finally said. “You look exhausted.”
Much to Ryan’s surprise, Dahlia shook her head. The movement caused her hair to fly in front of her face, making her look even more disheveled. “Maybe it’s the adrenaline, but I don’t feel like I can fall asleep now,” she said, pushing her hair back. “If you’re not too busy with your mission, can we just keep talking for a bit?”
As much as he was worried about Dahlia’s lack of sleep, Ryan was inwardly grateful. He wasn’t exactly eager to step back into Gavin’s room. “Maybe I should start at the beginning, too,” he said with a soft smile. “Did you hear that I actually found my parents in the Orange Islands?” Dahlia shook her head and seemed to lean closer towards her camera. “Well, it turns out they were broken out of a Rocket prison . . .”

IC: Zoe Llyan Darkness.
Movement.
A high-pitched scream.
A flash of light.
Zoe saw Stitch enveloped in a powerful glow that grew brighter and brighter with each passing second. Then . . . nothing.
She opened her eyes to an unsettlingly familiar scene. She was back in her room. Not the small space Team Skull had lent her back on Melemele Island. Not the barracks of Liberty's Alolan outpost. No, she was back in Vier Village on Four Island. The silence was deafening as she looked around. Everything was just like she'd remembered it. It was as if she'd never left.
A small cooing sound brought her out of her memories. Stitch was curiously eyeing a large poster on the wall featuring a stylized Lucario. "This is where I grew up, Stitch," she said with a hint of reminiscence in her voice. "I was . . . a little obsessed with aura powers." Zoe couldn't help but chuckle. After the past few days, she felt disillusioned by the respect and admiration she had for Aura Guardians. "Speaking of which . . . did you Teleport me here? Last thing I remember, we were on that mountain, then I saw you start to glow . . ." Stitch shrugged and moved over to another poster featuring a magical girl anime about two sisters. "I guess you can't really control when you Teleport, huh?" Zoe sighed. "Well, not to worry. We're safe now. I just hope the others are alright . . ."
A growling in her stomach pulled her thoughts away from how they'd gotten here. "I don't know about you, Stitch, but I'm starving. Let's go see what Mom has stored in the fridge."
And so Zoe and Stitch made their way downstairs to the kitchen. Just as Zoe was about to round the corner, she saw her mom standing at the sink. "You'd better go back in your Pokéball," she told Stitch. "I'm sure mom's got enough questions as it is."
Even as she returned the Cosmog, her mom noticed her approach. "Good morning, sleepyhead. About time you got up. Breakfast is on the table."
Zoe's eyes grew wide. A huge feast was laid out on the table. Pancakes, omelets, an assortment of cereals, and freshly chopped berries seemed to cover the entire table. "Wow! All of this for me?"
Even as she ran to sit down, her mom turned around, seeming to take note of her for the first time. "Hey, what are you doing here? I thought you left us!" Zoe stopped and turned around, confused. She saw an accusing gleam in her mom's eye as she looked her up and down. "And what's with that weird outfit you have on?"
A hundred emotions shot through Zoe at once. Shock. Betrayal. Anger. This was anything but the warm welcome home she'd expected. "Who are you to tell me what I can and can't do?" she retorted.
Her mother scoffed. "Bold of you to come waltzing back here like nothing ever happened."
"What are you talking about?"
"I heard how you left Team Liberty. I thought we raised you better than that." Zoe had never seen her mother this angry before. "We were supposed to look out for each other. A whole family supporting Team Liberty. But you don't look out for anyone but yourself!"
So that was it. All of this was because she'd had the gall to make her own decisions. "Who says I even wanted to be part of that stupid team?" Zoe shot back. "They treated me like a kid because they thought I wasn't good enough. That's why I decided to strike out on my own – I'm stronger by myself, without everyone telling me what I can and can't do."
Her mother looked confused for a second. "What are you on about? No one's treating you like a kid – although you're certainly acting like a spoiled brat." Her face hardened as she tossed down the towel she'd been using to dry dishes. "We have rules to help us survive together. And you've made it abundantly clear you have no respect for those rules. So you'd better get out. You're no longer welcome here."
Zoe felt her heart skip a beat. She stood rooted to the ground, playing her mother's words over and over again in her head. "What? Are you . . . disowning me?"
Her mother's voice was as cold as ice. "You're no family of mine."
Zoe couldn't believe it. First Collie had kept her off the front lines, now her mother was disowning her for deserting Team Liberty. Did no one have any faith in her? Zoe's hand clenched into a fist. "Fine!" she yelled, turning on her heel. "You want me out? I'm out!" Stomping as loudly as she could, she stormed past the food on the table and out the back door. She thought she heard her mother call out to her, but her voice was cut off by the door slamming behind her.
IC: Drifter Darkness.
Movement.
A high-pitched scream.
A flash of light.
Drifter saw that darn Cosmog enveloped in a powerful glow that grew brighter and brighter with each passing second. Then . . . nothing.
She knew where she was before she even opened her eyes. The smell hit her first: piney, with a hint of charcoal from the occasional bonfire. She was back in Iki Town. She hesitantly opened her eyes and immediately regretted doing so. She was in her old house. More specifically, she was in her big sister's room.
"Stupid Cosmog," she muttered. "Couldn't even get the room right." Her own room was just down the hall, not even twenty feet away. At least the memories associated with that room weren't nearly as painful. What had even possessed that Cosmog to Teleport her, anyway? She struggled to remember the seconds before the Teleport. Whatever had spooked the Cosmog must have come up on them suddenly. Probably that grim reaper the others kept going on about, whatever it really was. Drifter highly doubted the mountain was actually haunted by the harbinger of Death.
Although . . . the former occupant of the room she was in might argue otherwise. Drifter forced herself to look around. The room was exactly as she remembered it all those years ago. Trophies and awards lined the shelves. Various souvenirs Haeata had collected from the different islands of Alola lay scattered across the old, creaky desk, next to her island challenge amulet. A jewelry box lay open on the nightstand, a conspicuously empty slot where her Z-Ring should have been. Drifter subconsciously brought a hand to her arm, feeling her sister's bracelet. Long suppressed tears started to well up inside her. Why was life so cruel?
Just as she was about to break down, the door opened. "Hey," Drifter's mother said. "What are you doing here?"
Drifter closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Her mother was the last person she wanted to see right now. Things had been tense between them long before she had run away to join Team Skull. What must her mother think of her now?
"You alright?" The fake concern in her mother's voice twisted Drifter's stomach.
"I'm fine," she muttered, looking down at the floor. Instinctively she brought up a hand to hide the Z-Ring on her arm.
Evidently that wasn't enough to dissuade her mother. "Look, if this is about how I left . . . I'm sorry. I know I was supposed to take care of you as much as you were supposed to take care of me. But ever since the accident, my whole life got turned upside down. I didn't want to burden you."
Oh, that's rich. Drifter rolled her eyes. "Your life?" she said, turning away. Somehow all this pity was worse than the anger she'd expected to be met with. Was her mother really acting like everything would just go back to normal? And in Haeata's room of all places. It was a disgrace to her memory. "What about my life? I lost someone too, you know. Not that you ever cared about me. I was always just second fiddle, wasn't I?"
"Of course I care about you!" her mother cried. She moved closer, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Can't we just start over? After all, we're family." The action made Drifter want to vomit.
"No." Drifter pushed her mother's hand away and walked towards the door. "You lost that chance long ago."
"Wait!" her mother called after her. "Just give me another chance! I'll make it up to you, I promise!"
Drifter spared a glance over her shoulder. It truly was a pitiful sight, seeing her mother standing in the middle of Haeata's room. The room had been left completely untouched, as if her precious daughter would come home any day now. But the truth was obvious to anyone with an ounce of sense. Her mother had made her choice long before Haeata died. Drifter turned away. "We're done here."
As she walked off, Drifter thought she heard yelling coming from another room. Evidently her father hadn't gotten any better since she'd left. Hoping to avoid another confrontation, Drifter made a beeline for the door.
"I'm gonna strangle that Cosmog next time I see it," she muttered.
IC: Beast Darkness.
Movement.
A high-pitched scream.
A flash of light.
Beast saw Z's Cosmog enveloped in a powerful glow that grew brighter and brighter with each passing second. Then . . . nothing.
When he opened his eyes, he was back in their Melemele hideout. "What in the world . . . ?" He pulled back the curtains that sectioned off his room. The rest of the hideout was eerily quiet. A quick check behind the curtains revealed only Tracer seemed to have made the journey with him. His friend was sprawled out on his mattress, fast asleep.
Deciding it was best not to wake him just yet, Beast moved into the kitchen to look for something to eat. Thankfully, they still had plenty of canned goods from their last raid on Hau'oli. Cracking open a can of beans, he poured it into a wooden bowl.
He had just turned around to throw the can away when he heard movement behind him. Tracer must have woken up. "Good morning, sleepyhead," he said with a chuckle. "About time you got up. Breakfast is on the table."
"Wow! All of this for me?" Beast froze. That deep voice was definitely not Tracer's. But it was painfully familiar. He whirled around to find his twin brother, Double, standing casually at the table like he owned the place.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" Beast crushed the can in his hand as he glared at his twin. "I thought you left us!"
Double merely scoffed, reaching over to pop a bean in his mouth. "Who are you to tell me what I can and can't do?"
Beast felt his anger reach a boiling point. It was one thing to accept a boat ride with Double to another island. But to see him in their own home . . . it took everything Beast had in him to not rush over there and punch that smirk off his face. "Bold of you to come waltzing back here like nothing ever happened," he muttered.
"What are you talking about?" Double asked in mock confusion. "I thought blood ran thicker than thieves. C'mon, bro. You really gonna kick me out like that?"
"We were supposed to look out for each other." Beast glanced over at Tracer's quarters, and the other curtains that cordoned off the rooms of each of his closest friends. Friends he would give his life for. His eyes shot back to Double. "But you don't look out for anyone but yourself!"
Double laughed, that annoying smirk still on his face. "Who says I even wanted to be part of that stupid team? They treated me like a kid because they thought I wasn't good enough. That's why I decided to strike out on my own – I’m stronger by myself, without everyone telling me what I can and can't do."
"What are you on about?" Beast shook his head. Double was making even less sense than usual. "No one's treating you like a kid – although you're certainly acting like a spoiled brat." He threw the crumpled can to the ground and scowled as he remembered why his brother had left their group in the first place. "We have rules to help us survive together. And you've made it abundantly clear you have no respect for those rules. So you'd better get out. You're no longer welcome here."
Double looked over at him in what seemed to be genuine shock. "What? You're . . . disowning me? I thought family was supposed to stick together."
Beast narrowed his eyes at his twin. All the hurt and pain from his betrayal came rushing back in a flood of emotions. What he had done was unforgiveable, and he could barely stand to even look at him. "You're no family of mine."
Double threw his hands up into the air. "Fine! You want me out? I'm out!" In an uncharacteristic fit of rage, he stormed out the door.
"I hope I never see you again, you lazy, good-for-nothing jerk!" Beast's words were cut off by the slamming door. With a heavy sigh, Beast sat down and buried his head in his hands. His appetite was gone, and it seemed like his friends were as well. Had no one else been teleported with him?
He glanced at the door to their hideout, barely hanging on its hinges after Double had slammed it shut. If Drifter and the others were still on Mount Lanakila, he had to find them and rescue them. Beast pulled out his phone, thoughts racing through his mind. His best bet was to find Snake and the others. But if they were still on Ula'ula, he'd need some sort of transportation over there. Scrolling through his contacts, he found Snake's number and dialed him.
IC: Tracer Darkness.
Movement.
A high-pitched scream.
A flash of light.
Tracer saw Z's cosmic friend enveloped in a powerful glow that grew brighter and brighter with each passing second. Then . . . nothing.
Muffled voices filled Tracer's ears. People were talking above him, walking on a creaking floor. He opened his eyes, stunned. He was back in his parents' old apartment building. How was that even possible? Did that Cosmog really have the power to Teleport him all the way to Castelia City?
It was like an eerie time capsule. Had no one else moved into the apartment in all these years? His childhood room looked just like he remembered it. All the toys and games he'd had to leave behind rested neatly in little bins.
Confused and a little on edge, Tracer stepped out into the living room where he was met with another surprise. His grandmother was there, sitting in a chair staring at a television screen filled with static. His grandmother, who was supposed to be in Tapu Village. She didn't even seem to notice him.
"Hey," he said hesitantly.
No response.
Tracer cleared his throat and tried again. "What are you doing here?"
Again, no response.
This whole thing was already unsettling, but now Tracer was getting worried. He stepped into her line of sight. But Gran kept staring unblinkingly at the television static. "You alright?"
Gran's eyes darted to his ever so briefly, then back to the television. "I'm fine," she murmured.
This was not like Gran at all. She had always been a little odd, but never this cold and distant. Then again, the last time Tracer had seen her was before he'd joined Team Skull. He took a seat on the couch adjacent to her chair. "Look, if this is about how I left . . . I'm sorry." He let out a long sigh. Seeing the sorry state his grandmother was in filled him with immense guilt. "I know I was supposed to take care of you as much as you were supposed to take care of me. But ever since the accident, my whole life got turned upside down. I didn't want to burden you."
"Your life?" Gran refused to look at him, instead continuing to stare and the blank screen. "What about my life? I lost someone too, you know. Not that you ever cared about me. I was always just second fiddle, wasn't I?"
As disquieting as her actions were, her words were like a dagger through Tracer's heart. He'd never really stopped to consider how his parents' death had affected Gran. He'd been too focused on his own grief and anger at losing not only his parents but his home, his friends, his entire life in Castelia. Sure, he had his partners in Team Skull now. But he'd never really considered how he had abandoned the only true family he had left. "Of course I care about you!" he cried, kneeling next to Gran's chair. Tears welled up in his eyes as he placed a hand on her shoulder. "Can't we start over? After all, we're family."
With surprising force, Gran brushed his hand aside and got up from the chair. "No," she said coldly. "You lost that chance long ago."
"Wait!" Tracer cried as Gran walked toward the door with surprising agility for someone so old and frail. "Just give me another chance! I'll make it up to you, I promise!"
Gran paused in the doorway. She glanced back at him with contempt. "We're done here." And with that she was gone, leaving Tracer kneeling on the floor in tears. The sound of television static filled the room until he could hear nothing else.

IC - ? - Heahea City, Akala Island:
An unwelcome disturbance sent the mood crashing down from paradise.
A gasp erupted from the crowd as a Crobat materialized from further back, swooping in for its attack on their speaker--no, their savior. As its poisonous wings sliced through skin, the man stumbled back, arm gashed and teeth gnashed in surprise and pain. With the spell broken, some of those yet unconvinced began to turn tail and flee, dispersing into the surrounding streets. Quickly yet he resumed his grin, eyes following the retreating bat and landing on the group in back where now a Turtonator and Golem had joined in attack.
Now a barrage of boulders headed his way. This would not do, not today--not again. With something between a snarl and a smile across his lips, the man threw a hand forward and focused his power. Dark pulses of energy flew from his fingertips, and in a flash of shadow each flying rock was blown to bits. Shrapnel rained upon the crowd, but he did not mind--soon enough they'd join his kind.
"Well, well, I suppose I must welcome our interlopers to this wondrous event!" he said, looking upon his foes with malice clear in his eye. The crowd en mass turned at his word, watching for the next wonder or woe to unfold. "Have you come to seek enlightenment? To join in the brilliant light of our savior?" He tilted his head, gesturing broadly to their audience. "Or . . . do you come to deny these fine folk their heavenly salvation?"

IC: Lohe Mahina - Heahea City
Lohe’s insides sewed themselves back together as the infernal sound ceased. It hurt like hell, but he could think again. The situation dawned on Lohe, and it was bad. He had picked a fight with a Dark-Type sound wielder in the middle of the day. The enemy had plenty of meat shields to sacrifice, that Lohe would rather not kill. In other words, it was the worst possible match-up for him.
The man on stage chose to start speaking. It was nauseating to listen in its own right, but it gave his body a moment to fix itself and for him to think of a plan. He was at a disadvantage against the speaker, but Lohe had a powerful card to play. But he couldn’t rely on the otherworldly monster to avoid casualties. Not while he barely knew it. And he knew firsthand how awful its poison could be. Clear out the bodies first, then take down the leader.
Ruthven appeared from his PokeBall, looking agitated. He hadn’t been hurt by the noise that had Lohe to his knees, but even in his PokeBall it had him riled up. He coiled around Lohe as the vampire rose to his feet.
Lohe clasped his ears. “I just want you to shut up.” Ruthven’s mouth opened, unleashing a high pitch Screech at the stage, hoping to occupy the crowd and prevent the speaker’s sound based attack all at once.
Through the noise, Lohe whispered a word only those with hearing as good as a bat could hear. Nosferatu took flight above the eyes of the crowd and speaker.

-==IC: Corey Bouchard - Traveling, Poni Island==-
Corey and the Tranquill held a staring contest for a few moments, before the blonde held up a Poké Ball and let the Tranquill relax after the worry that had been placed on her briefly. "I have a Pidgeot that can carry me, but thanks for the offer, it's appreciated." They coughed to hide a snicker at all that just happened, but nodded as they sent out their Pidgeot climbed onto their own flying Pokémon. "Alright, lead us when you're ready."
-==IC: Colleen Llyan - Prosthetics Lab, Hau'oli City==-
"I really need to brush up on them." Colleen admitted, as she rubbed the back of her head. This had been the second time during this journey where knowledge of the legends and myths of the region would have helped out a lot. Still... she turned her gaze around the room as she looked at the different parts of the vault that could be seen in the stairwell. "What do they have to do with this vault though? Is there one sealed away in here or something?" Colleen lowered her voice at the last sentence as she glanced back to the stairway they had come from. Sure, this was pretty secure, but she didn't want to take chances and make assumptions.
-==IC: Ray Hakuda/Lucia Zyther - Heahea City, Akala Island==-
"Ah..." Lucia clicked her phone off as Kyle addressed her. "Yes and no; it's nothing about the mission or anything, and I won't let it distract me. I just got a bit reminiscent of things while we were on the boat, and I had wanted to talk to someone about it, but I guess she's busy." She forced a smile briefly, then looked at the map on Kyle's Poké Gear. "So, we're headed south, right? Doesn't look like the trip will take us too long."
"Hopefully the cave doesn't say otherwise." Ray mumbled as he uneasily eyed the tunnel that sat at the end of the road. "We could fly over, which probably would be faster in general, but I'm worried about what would happen if we got spotted by the cultists. What do you think, Kyle?"
-==IC: Jenny Hakuda - Ula'Ula Island==-
Jenny shook her head in slight amusement at Ethan's antics. "Not really, no." She confirmed as she looked around. "Shall we, then?"
-==IC: Chloe Hikari/Olivia Seaton/Zeraora - Heahea City, Akala Island==-
Zeraora paused as Ellen approached. The lightning Pokémon gingerly padded its way toward the young girl as it eyed her uncertainly. But after patience on Ellen's part, Zeraora sat down and allowed itself to be pet, opting to trust in what she said.
"Not at the moment," Olivia started, then glanced over to Chloe as she gave a slight smile. "But that's why I called for help. I can trust ya to get more information about that." Chloe looked surprised at first at Olivia's comment as it seemed like the idea to use her psychic powers had not actually occurred to her. However, it clicked after a moment, and she grinned.
"Right, of course!" Chloe exclaimed as she glanced over to Zeraora. "Is it okay if I use my psychic powers to read your responses to our questions?" She asked as she knelt down next to the yellow furball that was now all but nuzzled into Ellen. Zeraora looked cautious, but nodded softly. "Alright," Chloe began as she reached out to read the Pokémon's thoughts. "What happened to your trainer? Is there a reason you're here on Akala?"
"[My partner] left me in Malie after her father was [lost] to a group of [odd individuals] who approached him one day. She didn't say anything, but I could feel her assume the worst and wish for [revenge]." The Zeraora explained, though Chloe frowned slightly as there were some words that she could sense the intention behind, but not the actual meaning. "The other day after [my friend] took care of me, I sensed [my partner] head to the dock and followed her trail in the direction. She is on this island."
Chloe quickly relayed what she understood of the Zeraora's explanation, to which it nodded in confirmation. "This sounds similar to what we were asked to look into, doesn't--" As Chloe spoke, she was caught off guard by a low growling that emanated from the electric-type. It stared off toward the east and seemed to look at nothing in particular. "What's wrong?"
"The [wrong aura] are here."
-==IC: Marie Homura - Ecruteak City, Johto==-
With a small smile, Marie slipped out of her jacket and draped it over Aori's shoulders. "There you go, kiddo. That should help at least a little bit." She looked back out over the water as she wore a contemplative look on her face. "I've come here quite a few times myself; I find it really calming."

IC: Yamamoto Aori - Park, Ecruteak City “Arigato, Homura-san,” Aori said as she felt the jacket warm her arms, at least a little bit. She nodded as she continued to stare at the Magikarp swimming in the pond. “It is calming,” she agreed.
IC: Ellen Burks - Docks, Heahea City “Wrong aura?” Ellen looked at the bristling cat Pokémon as she pondered Chloe’s interpretation. “Do you mean the Missing Zero’s on this island?”
She looked over in the direction Zeraora was staring, but from her vantage point she just saw city streets and buildings. She looked back at the others. “I know on Poni Island we weren’t supposed to engage the Instances directly. But if there really is a cult that’s worshiping Missing Zero, then this ‘wrong aura’ could give us a lead. I think we should investigate. Zeraora—“ she directed her attention to the wary Pokémon. “We’re here to help. Do you think you could lead us to this . . . ‘wrong aura?’”
IC: Bully/Trigger/Snake - Streets, Heahea City Bully managed to get to his feet, his pain suddenly gone. But it was quickly replaced by a different pain — a ringing in his ears as Lohe’s Noivern directed a sound-based attack at the stage.
Off to the side, Bully saw Snake on all fours, muttering something inaudible to a Pokéball in his hand. Then his Wishiwashi burst out of its ball and vanished into the crowd.
“Yo, Lohe!” Bully cried over the Noivern’s unending attack. “I thought we were just trying to attack the people on stage, not the whole dang city!”

Zeraora growled again, but nodded briskly and ran off in the direction they sensed the messed up auras, Chloe and Olivia hot on their tail.

IC - Sonja Baron/Madison Hayes - Traveling, Poni Island:
The small bird loosed an audible sigh of relief as Corey climbed atop their Pidgeot, before vanishing back into her Poké Ball as Sonja returned her. "Alright; off to the cave, then. Let's go, Ares!"
With flaps of their wings, the three flying Pokémon kicked off from the ground and took to the sky. There was not much opportunity for conversation as the trio soared, given the rush of wind around them, but that was an acceptable sacrifice for the time they would save on their journey. As they flew, Sonja kept her map open, periodically checking their progress and adjusting their direction even so often with the others in tow.
Before too long, the canyons of northern Poni Island came into view. A number of smaller caves dotted the rocky walls, but with direction from the map, Sonja prompted Ares to dip down and fly toward a larger, more prominent cavern entrance. As they touched down, Sonja double-checked her map.
"This should be it," Sonja said. "This place is pretty big, so there's no telling where exactly these Team Mystic people are. Unfortunately going in and tracking them down manually is probably going to be our only way to do this."
IC - Skye Hall/Landon Hall - Prosthetics Lab, Hau'oli City:
"That's one way to put it," Landon said, smiling. He moved down to the end of the hall, stopping at the vault door and pulling out a key card attached to the lanyard around his neck. He swiped it in the side console and then typed in a code. The sound of gears turning began to rumble through the walls, and after a moment the large door swung open. Landon stepped inside, flipping on the lights within.
There were a number of machines and equipment of unknown use present within here--if Skye had to guess she would have assumed they were prototypes or something that the lab needed to keep as secure as possible. But these were not what Landon seemed interested in. Instead he continued through to the back of the vault. As they reached the far side, a strange, semi-humanoid mechanical object came into view. It was shaped almost like a doll in a dress, with large plates attached to its head that resembled rabbit ears, but the entire thing was fashioned from metal. It floated within a glass case, suspended in air but otherwise seeming entirely lifeless.
"What is that?" Skye asked.
"It's called Magearna," Landon said. "Pretty cool, huh? We found it abandoned here when we were clearing out old equipment. No idea where it came from or who it belonged to. But right now it's inactive and we haven't quite figured out how to reactivate it." He looked at Skye and Colleen. "I figured since you're trying to fight that Missing Zero thing, you might be able to figure out how to turn it back on."
"Wait, you want us to take it?" Skye said. "Are you sure?"
"Positive," Landon said. "It's one of Alola's mythical Pokémon, so that means it should be pretty helpful, yeah? Besides, we're out of ideas for it here--better you take it and see what you can figure out."
IC - Ethan Worth - Ferry to Ula'ula Island:
"Let's do it!" Ethan cried. After a moment, he looked at Evan. "How do we do this?"
IC - Esen Windred - Heahea City, Akala Island:
Upon entering the confines of the city, it did not take long for the group to hear the echoes of commotion occurring from within. An unsettling voice carried through the air, bouncing off of walls and windows--likely amplified by some sort of speaker system. Whatever was happening, it was obviously not good; there were a number of concerned murmurs cutting through the crowds around them, and more than one individual clearly fleeing from whatever was occurring back that way.
The group carried on.
IC - ? - Heahea City, Akala Island:
Cries of pain sounded from the crowd as the Screech bombarded the square. Even the cultists on the stage appeared to be in extreme discomfort from the noise, though their leader appeared . . . less so, instead merely observing Lohe and his companions with a smug smile on his face. Wordlessly, he nodded to his comrades. Through their pain, six of the cultists forced themselves to their feet and dropped from the stage, pulling out a mixture of chains, knives, and metal pipes from their robes. The crowd parted as they charged toward Lohe and the other Team Skull grunts with clear intent to harm.

IC: Evan Tierra
"LIKE THIS!" Evan shouted as he raised his hand and made a slashing motion downward. Memories of the Ruins of Abundance's location flew by as he recalled it. Before he knew it, a person-sized portal in Space was formed, with a glowing pink ring around it. "I suggest we hurry along, lest it close." Evan said, smiling confidently.

IC - Kyle Eston/Levi Alaric - Heahea City, Akala Island:
"Honestly, I think we probably have a better chance of avoiding cultists and other obstacles by flying," Kyle said. "It's definitely a lot quicker and easier to get away than on foot, so . . . Let's do it." He stopped and sent out Jaeda. The Charizard stretched her wings wide, letting out a triumphant roar to the sky. After giving her a pat on the back, Kyle turned to Levi. "Alright, kiddo, come here--you're riding with me."
The younger trainer let out a surprised yelp as Kyle picked him up and hoisted him onto Jaeda's back. Once he was situated, Kyle climbed up behind him. He nodded at Ray and Lucia, giving them a playful smile. "Don't fall too far behind. Let's go, Jaeda!" With that, the Charizard kicked off and took to the air, following her trainer's directions toward the Ruins of Life.
IC - Ethan Worth - Ula'ula Island:
The portal before them opened up directly into what appeared to be the desert. It was a strange sort of window mashing their current destination right up against what lay behind the mountains. Though Ethan had seen something similar to this previously, he wasn't sure that he had ever had the privilege of actually utilizing one of these portals. The chance to use it was thrilling; the sight of a rough sandstorm beyond, not so much.
Still, he looked to his companions and saluted. "See you on the other side!"
With that, he stepped through, appearing before the decorative entrance to the Ruins of Abundance. The shift from somewhat-cool oceanside town to desert heat was more disorienting than the change in soundscape or even the knowledge of having passed through a rip in space itself. But what was more concerning than that were the sounds of some sort of scuffle echoing from within the temple.
Ethan looked back at Evan and Jenny as they stepped though, pulling a Poké Ball off of his belt. "Sounds like someone got here first," he said. "Guess we oughta show 'em who's boss."

IC: Ellen Burks/Lohe Mahina/Bully/Trigger/Snake – Streets, Heahea CityDid you really have to ask Zeraora to take us to the weird aura thing right this second? Symbio asked as the group raced through the city, trying not to lose sight of the electric cat Pokémon. "How was I supposed to know they'd run off so quickly?" Ellen panted as she ducked around a malasada stand. Heahea was a fascinating city and under normal circumstances, Ellen would have loved to explore and take in the sights. As it was, she barely had time to register cobblestone streets and intricate fountains before they were left in the dust. Her legs were growing tired, but she knew the moment she stopped to catch her breath, Zeraora would get out of sight. Chloe, Olivia and Esen were further ahead and in less danger of losing sight of their quarry – courtesy of the older girls having much longer legs. "I don't suppose you could use your psychic powers to help us catch up?" Ellen grumbled. I'm not sure that's the wisest idea. Even as Symbio responded to Ellen, the mental image and feeling that accompanied his words explained everything. They had no idea what this "wrong aura" Zeraora had sensed was. But if it resulted in a battle, they would want to be at their full strength. Ellen shot back a mental image of their Mega Evolution, the implication being that as Mega Reuniclus, Ellen and Symbio shared their strength and stamina. If Ellen was exhausted from running by the time they got to a fight, it would affect Mega Symbio as well. Guess we’ll be equally exhausted either way, Symbio grumbled. But it can’t be too much farther . . . right? *** Slowly, painfully, Snake rose to his feet, wiping bile on his sleeve. Glancing around, he stepped onto the ledge of a nearby fountain. It wasn’t much, but it put him a few inches closer to the height of the stage. Lohe’s Noivern had stopped its incessant screeching and lifted off from the man’s shoulders. The crowd had mostly dispersed, leaving only those who had already been brainwashed and the half dozen cloaked Team Skull members who were slowly approaching with a variety of weapons. “Heavenly salvation, you say?” Snake gestured toward the stage. “All I see is a bunch of people getting waterboarded with your creepy barrel of light and coming out brainwashed!” As he raised his arms, Snake eyed the distance to the stage and did some quick calculations in his head. “Trigger!” he cried. “Drop the beat!” If Trigger had any misgivings about his leader’s plan, he chose not to voice them. Instead, he moved closer to the fountain, brought a hand to his mouth, and began beatboxing. “Alright, listen up now, y’all.” Snake began to bob his head in time with Trigger’s beat. “You’re in for a real treat. This one goes out to Dweller and my other buddies in Team Skull. Lost though you may be, may you never forget where you came from.” Extending an arm out toward the cloaked Skull members, Snake began to rap. “Yo, yo, Team Skull! Yo, yo, Team Skull! The gang’s on the loose, There’s nothin’ you can do! But what is the tale of our measly little crew? What I tell ya is not new. Pay attention! It’s all true! Listen up and you’ll know Team Skull’s history when I’m through!” The cloaked Skull members ignored the rap and kept advancing, brandishing their weapons in a manner that suggested they aimed to silence Snake for good. Bully cast a worried glance at the others before providing backup vocals. “Yo, yo, Team Skull! Yo, yo, Team Skull!” Snake gave him a reassuring nod before continuing. “We come from different places, different islands, different races. But one thing we got in common is the pain on our faces. Some failed the island challenge, couldn’t do a single trial. Some had abusive parents who were really pretty vile. Some simply couldn’t deal with all this crap for one more mile, All the while, got a file from the fuzz stacked on our pile!” “Yo, yo Team Skull! Yo, yo Team Skull!” “‘You’re not good enough!’ was the anthem in our homes, If you hear it long enough it starts to sink into your bones! So we all band together, buncha losers up in here. And all society can do is point at us and jeer. Some are queer, Some don’t mere- -ly adhere, To their peer, Nowhere near What they revere. What’s the big deal? Now we all feel, Like we must steal for our next meal! When they try to bring us down, We just lift each other higher. And our lives stop tumbling Like spin cycles on your dryer. We’re a family, that’s true, Not through blood, but we’re a crew. And everything was fine until the day that we met you!” Snake pointed straight at the main speaker on stage as Bully continued his chorus. “Yo, yo, Team Skull! Yo, yo, Team Skull!” “Team Skull welcomes all! Welcomes any who will call. Little did we know that that would be our downfall! You joined our ranks, drained our banks, All the while we gave thanks! Then . . . boom! Changed your tune. It all happened way too soon. Now Po Town’s a ghost town, The monsters won’t slow down! And you’d have us all drown, Get brainwashed by some clown. They be creepin' in your soul, And I think that was your goal. Now Team Skull has lost control, And our members paid the toll. We’ve lost family, friends and all, And you, mister, have the gall, To claim salvation when we fall Away from virtues once held tall!” “Yo, yo, Team Skull! Yo, yo, Team Skull!” As Snake paused to wipe away tears that had sprung to his eyes, he noticed Lohe walking towards the grunts, armed only with his staff. Six-on-one did not seem like favorable odds, but Lohe had a strange air of confidence about him. His Noivern flapped its wings, creating a strong wind at Lohe’s back. Snake noticed the man’s Crobat lingering behind the stage, close to where Riiona was hidden. With a sly grin, Snake went into his next verse. “I’ve said enough, You guys are tough! Seems my words were just a puff Of hot air. Don’t you care? Under those creepy cloaks you wear Were my friends, once so loyal. Now my blood’s starting to boil! ‘Kay, that’s it, you’ve ruin’t my day, Disrespecting beats I lay. Time to pass it to Lohe, And hear what he’s got to say!” Lohe made no move to speak. Much like the cultists, he didn’t even acknowledge Snake’s rap. Instead, propelled by his Noivern’s tailwind, he approached the cloaked grunts at a much greater speed than they could expect. As Trigger continued beatboxing in the background, Lohe smashed his staff into the ribcage of the cultist at the far left. The next one charged Lohe with a knife, who sidestepped and delivered a blow to his back. A chain wrapped around Lohe’s arm. He pulled it with a force belying his frame, dragging the cultist who held the other end to the ground. The first assailants got up and scrambled to positions around Lohe. He was well and truly surrounded now. All eyes were on him. Lohe’s eyes glanced at the stage. He uttered a quiet “Now.” Nosferatu flapped all four of his wings, shooting out from behind the stage. His jaw clamped down on the microphone the lead speaker had been holding and ripped it out of his hands. He flew above the crowd and towards the fray. Then the Crobat dropped the mic above Lohe’s head, who caught it as he batted away a cultist. “Put them all to sleep,” Lohe said. Nosferatu let out a high-pitched wail transferred and amplified by microphone. Hypnotic pulses echoed out of the sound system, causing all six cultists — and the remaining brainwashed citizens of Heahea — to collapse at once. “Yo, Lohe!” Bully cried out. “Don’t you know how to rap? You were supposed to lay down some sick rhymes! Like this! ‘Put them all to sleep, Don’t wanna hear a peep! Y’all be dreamin’ of Mareep! That’s okay, ‘cause talk is cheap!’” Lohe just stared impassively at Bully and the others. It was hard to tell if he was annoyed or simply unamused. It was during this awkward silence, broken only by Trigger’s beatboxing, that Snake and the others noticed the newcomers. *** Ellen wasn’t sure what she expected, but it certainly wasn’t this. As Zeraora led them onward, they found several people running in the opposite direction, all of them terrified. At last they arrived in what seemed to be a town square, littered with a handful of bodies on the ground surrounding a haggard-looking man holding a microphone. Further away, several cloaked figures stood atop a small stage. If that wasn’t odd enough, a small group dressed in punk-like attire stood on the ledge of a nearby fountain, beatboxing of all things. At first Ellen thought they’d found both their targets at once — the cloaked figures definitely seemed cult-like, and the rappers fit the description of Team Valor. But their lyrics quickly identified them as belonging to a different gang altogether. “Yo, yo, Team Skull! Yo, yo, Team Skull!” The lead rapper seemed to take note of the new arrivals, a gleam in his eye as he went into his next verse. “Welcome to the scene, new chicks! Guess it’s time for a remix. Fed man didn’t wanna rap, So I’ll give a quick recap! Team Skull got compromised by creepy preacher man up there. Now people getting hypnotized and brainwashed, so beware! I tried to reach them with my rap, but they don’t give a crap. And so our buddy Lohe gave them all a little nap.” The gang member turned his attention back to the stage, a devilish grin spreading across his face. “‘Course, I’d get no satisfaction, Just by rapping with no action. I’ll have you know — your mind I’ll blow — This was all one big distraction!” Right on cue, a lone Wishiwashi darted out from behind a speaker system and shot a Water Pulse at the lead cultist’s face. The tiny blast of water wasn’t enough to do any damage, but left the man soaking wet. The rapper immediately dipped into an elegant bow as his two cohorts cheered and whooped. Still in the bow, he looked up at the man he’d just assaulted. “Your move, preacher boy.” Ellen’s eyes grew wide as she looked up at the man on stage. The hood of his cloak had been pulled back to reveal a dark mane of hair. His golden eyes narrowed as he regarded the Team Skull members with something akin to annoyance, as if they were little more than a swarm of buzzing Cutiefly. It was the same deranged sense of ego she had seen in Opelucid. A chill ran down Ellen’s spine. Any exhaustion she may have felt from running across the city was replaced by a righteous anger. Through their mental link, she felt Symbio’s fury fuel her own. They barely noticed the light of Mega Evolution surrounding Symbio’s body. As their minds melded into one, both Ellen and Symbio took on a fighting stance. “ Kane!” they shouted across the town square while also directing their thoughts straight into the man’s mind. “ What are you doing here?!”

IC - Kane/Esen Windred - Heahea City, Akala Island:His wet hair, displaced by such a disgraceful act of disrespect, plastered to his face. Yet as he swept it aside and did his best to calm his mind, what should reach his ears but the voice of a child so bereft of cheer, here of all places, this little island space. Golden eyes swept the downed crowd and fell on a face so familiar. He might have frowned, but instead he smiled, a wildness in his eyes that had once not been there. " Child," he called, drawing out the word with a dangerous glee. "It has certainly been a while." Kane held his arms out wide. The cut that had landed on his arm earlier was no longer present, and he appeared none the worse for wear for it. "As I have tried to make oh so clear to our mutual friends, I am simply spreading the word of the Great Eater." He swept his gaze across the growing crowd of dissidents. It had started with only a few, but now four more had joined. The bristling, bolting Electric-Type in their midst was yet another point of concern. Quite a little group they had amassed in such little time. Six remaining on the stage plus himself--well, the odds were not favorable, but that was no matter. None of this truly mattered. Certainly, there was more joy to be found in the slow poisonous conversion, but if the spread must be done by force . . . There was a movement of robes so quick that it took a moment to register that Kane had moved in front of the barrel. One pale hand rested on the lip of the barrel as he leaned slightly over it, watching his adversaries with that wide grin plastered on his face. The other had dipped into the barrel, scooping out the source of the light and holding it aloft. It was a small, jagged crystal that reflected twisted rainbows of light off of itself. Looking at it was . . . difficult, to put it one way; as if to lay eyes on it was to peer into a rippled amalgamation of the world around it. "But, as the choice has been so rudely stolen away from those who might wish to heed us," he continued. "It rests upon my humble shoulders to invoke the divine storm and remove these prideful heathens from our midst." He clenched his fist around the crystal. It quickly began to crack under his grip, light beginning to emit from within; at the same time, Kane's form began to shift, growing paler and taller. As the crystal shattered, reduced to nothing but dust in the wind, a field of energy swept across the surrounding block of city. It was anarchy in an instant. The six cultists on stage transformed, mutating into the tall, featureless forms of Nobuddy. Around half of the dozing crowd, including the cultists there, began to arise, life vanished from their eyes and color from their skin as they became used to their new Walkorpse forms. Some began to feast on their snoozing comrades; others began to shuffle toward Ellen and Lohe's groups. Fixtures in the square shifted and came to life--of immediate note, cars and trucks that gave rise to the tank-like Drivedie Instances; powerlines broke free, forming into some sort of naga-like creature formed from electrical wire; and the microphone within Lohe's hand transformed into the squirming body of a Spyfly. Meanwhile, Kane's own transformation seemed to have completed. Where once stood the familiar form of Seth Vicens's Shadow Self, now there stood a tall, imposing figure. He remained clad in black and red robes, but his body had contorted, arms and neck becoming unnaturally long. The long, black hair that had adorned his head was gone, replaced with a bald head with a face that resembled a bleeding mask more than living tissue. The end result was something eerily human, yet so many steps away from it that it was difficult to recognize it as such. "Now," Kane said, his voice eerily calm and monotone as he raised his arms to the heavens. "Go, my children; let us cleanse this place in the name of the Eater."

IC - Sonja Baron/Madison Hayes - Reflection Cave, Poni Island:
Reflection Cave was a maze. Perhaps it was the result of residing on Tapu Fini's island, or perhaps it was a natural property, but the place was also covered in a haze that made it difficult to keep track of time and direction. As they picked their way through the cave, each of the group kept their guard up, ready for attacks by enemies that never actually came. And despite Hayes keeping her mind open, it didn't appear as if there was much life to follow--at least, not yet.
Sonja was just about to say something when they came to a split in the tunnel. There were three tunnels they could take; above them, each tunnel was marked with a symbol. One resembled fire, one resembled wind, and one resembled stone. In the ground before them, there was a brief message written. As Hayes moved forward to examine each of the tunnels, Sonja stooped down in front of the writing.
"'What word of five letters has one left when two are removed?'" she read aloud. "Is that supposed to be a riddle?"
Hayes shrugged. "These Mystic people are supposed to value intelligence, right?" she said. "Perhaps its their way of weeding out those they do not want to find them."
"So, what, the answer will point to the right tunnel?" Sonja said. She sighed, visibly annoyed. "We don't have time for this . . ."
IC - Skye Hall/Landon Hall - Prosthetics Lab, Hau'oli City:
There was plenty of time to spend examining the inert Magearna, so Skye took full advantage of it. As the minutes ticked by she hardly spoke, instead pacing around, stooping low, peering at the Pokémon in front of her. If it weren't for the legends about it, she wouldn't have believed that this was anything more than an intricately-crafted machine. Yet somewhere in there lay a power that needed only be awakened--a power that could certainly be used in their favor for the trials to come. The only question was, how would they reactivate it? Landon and his colleagues had tried everything they could think to do, so Skye wasn't sure what else might work.
Still, leaving it in this vault wouldn't do any more good than failing to find a way. And if they did find a way . . .
"Alright; we'll take it with us," Skye said. "I don't know how we might wake it up, but we can at least try, right?"
"I have full confidence that you'll try and succeed," Landon said, giving his sister an encouraging pat on the back. He approached the container's control panel, inputting several commands. As they watched, Magearna's form vanished into a Premier Ball that dropped into view, which then took the Pokémon's place inside of the container. Then the glass rose, allowing Landon to pick up the ball and hand it to Skye. "Take good care of it, will ya? And let me know as soon as you figure out how to wake it up--I'd love to see it in action."
Skye stared at the ball in her hand for a moment, and then gave Landon a little salute and a smile. "Will do." After securing the ball in her bag, she looked around. "Gavin's stuff is probably done around now, right?
Landon moved past her. "Yeah, we should probably head back upstairs. This way, please."
When they arrived back upstairs, Gavin was right where they had left him--unsurprisingly--although Ryan seemed to have gone out. Luckily, Gavin's temper seemed to have evened out, so when Landon approached and undid the machine around his arm, he did not put up a fight as one might have expected. The sudden termination of Gavin's arm was now encased in a metallic, circular node that, per Landon's earlier explanation, would allow direct connectivity with a prosthetic arm.
About ten minutes later, with one last trip out of the room and then back, that was exactly what they witnessed. The mechanical prosthetic popped into place, connected magnetically to the node, and after a few adjustments Landon slid his seat back, dusting his hands off against each other. "Alrighty, how does that feel?"
As Gavin held up his new arm for the first time, clenching the dark metal into a fist and then relaxing his fingers again, he wasn't quite sure how to feel. Admittedly he hadn't had high expectations when Skye had initially brought up this topic, but to now have virtually feel range of feeling and movement in an appendage that he had not felt in months . . . It was a strange mix of emotions that he wasn't quite sure how to express. Instead he simply looked at Landon, giving a small smile and nodding. "It's good."
Landon gave him two thumbs up. "I'll take it." He wrote some notes down and handed a piece of paper to Gavin. "Care instructions to maintain the arm, nothing too complicated. You should find it to be sturdy enough for use in combat, but be advised that doing so may result in quicker breakage, so I would recommend avoiding that if possible. And should something happen that would require maintenance . . . Well, you know where to find me."
"Wonderful!" Skye said. "Congrats, Gavin--you're officially a cyborg!"
For the first time in a long time, Gavin couldn't suppress a giddy chuckle nor the slight blush on his face. "Yeah, yeah," he said. "Whatever, I think we're done here. We've got other business to do, right?"
"Guess you're right," Skye said. "Well, thanks a ton, Landon--I'll speak for Gavin and say we appreciate your help."
Landon brushed it off. "No problemo. I'm just happy to help. Come on--I'll lead you to the lobby."
In the lobby, Kailea hummed to herself as she went about tidying up the front desk. The door ahead rung as it opened, but she held off on looking up for now as she continued her work. "Welcome, welcome!" she said distractedly as two pairs of feet approached. "Are you checking in for an appoin--?" Her voice trailed off in surprise as she looked up at the two odd-looking newcomers, unsure of what to make of their strange suits nor their grey-tinged skin.
"Greetings," one said, oblivious to the woman's shock. They held up a screen displaying three pictures. "Please cooperate. Do you recognize these individuals?"
IC - Ethan Worth/? - Ula'ula Island:
The temple was a full-on brawl as Ethan, Evan, and Jenny charged in. To their shock, a number of Instances were present within, without any sign of the umbilical cords that would normally supply them power. What was most surprising, however, was that it seemed to be a two-versus-many battle--and the two non-Instances were holding their own surprisingly well.
It was a pair, trainer and Pokémon. The former was a young man with a sort of punk aesthetic, platinum blond hair covering one eye and close-cut around the rest of his head. He wore dark clothes with red accents and seemed more annoyed than anything by the presence of the creatures around him. Beside him, a quadrupedal Pokémon of some sort, very chimeric in appearance with feathers covering the front half of its body and the back half appearing to be more reptilian. Most intimidating, however, was the Pokémon's heavy mask that obscured everything but its dark eyes and the blade-like protrusion on its head.
As the group watched, the trainer gave an order that prompted the Pokémon--"Null," from the sounds of it--to charge toward a pair of Fraygrins. With one quick X-Scissor delivered through its claws, the creature tore through the Instances almost effortlessly. And as a Venophage swept to the side in an attempt to target its trainer, Null's eye glinted and it moved to intercept, smashing the Poison-Type Instance to the ground.
"Alright, good moves!" Ethan shouted, prompting a surprised look from the other trainer. "Room for a few more?" He ran forward, tossing a Poké Ball and releasing Céris. The Scizor dropped into the fray, immediately charging forward and engaging another Venophage as Ethan skidded to a halt beside their new companion. He held a hand forward. "Sup? I'm Ethan."
"I don't care." The other trainer didn't even look at him as he answered.
"Huh." Ethan smiled, looking to Evan and Jenny and raising his voice. "Hey, guys! I found another Gavin!"

IC: Ryan Sanders – Prosthetics Lab, Hau'oli City/Dahlia Seaton – Route 126, Hoenn "And that's when we decided to split up into smaller groups to cover more missions at once," Ryan said. "We're supposed to be looking into some of Alola's Legendary Pokémon rumored to be on Melemele Island."
"At a prosthetics lab?" An amused smile played on Dahlia's face. "What kind of Legendary Pokémon do you expect to find there?"
"Well, there aren't any Legendary Pokémon here," Ryan said. "We just made a quick detour to get Gavin a new arm. Speaking of which . . ." He looked up from his Pokégear and his smile dropped from his face.
"What's wrong?" Dahlia asked.
Ryan looked around at the unfamiliar hallway he found himself in. "I, uh . . . guess I got so caught up in talking with you that I wasn't paying attention to where I was going."
"You mean you're lost?" Dahlia failed to hide her snickering grin.
"No," Ryan said sheepishly. "I'm just a little . . . turned around. Anyway, I should probably let you go. Gavin should be done with his operation by now, and the others may be wondering where I am."
"That's fair," Dahlia said with a yawn. "Goodnight. Or good morning or whatever time it is over there. You'll have to catch me up later with how you got yourself un-lost."
"I told you I'm not—" The video suddenly cut out as Dahlia hung up. Ryan let out a long sigh as he looked up and down the hall. How could he have been so careless as to get himself turned around in an unfamiliar building? Turning around, he started walking back the way he came. The lab couldn’t be that big, right?
It did not take long at all for Ryan to find his way back to familiar territory. After only a few turns he ended up back in the front lobby. His relief at no longer being lost (not that he'd been lost to begin with) quickly evaporated at the sight of two strangely dressed people confronting the receptionist.
Ryan rested a hand on one of his Pokéballs, ready for anything. He didn't want to jump to conclusions, but something felt off about these people, and the receptionist didn't look too comfortable herself. "Is there a problem here?" he asked, announcing his presence.
IC: Ellen Burks (Mega Symbio)/Bully (Kino)/Trigger (Tokahiko)/Snake (Riiona) – Streets, Heahea City Ellen and Symbio couldn't believe their eyes. "So you work for Missing Zero, now?" All around them, Instances were rising, born from inanimate objects and humans alike. Ellen and Symbio ignored them. All of their attention was focused on the newly transformed Kane. "You may be singing a different tune, but you're still spreading nothing but lies! And we won't let you deceive anyone else!" Trainer and Pokémon alike brought their hands forward, sending twin Signal Beams at the creature on stage.
"Yo, did that chick just shoot a laser beam out of her hand?" Trigger gaped at Ellen in disbelief.
"We've got bigger things to worry about," Snake said, looking around at the zombies and other creatures slowly approaching. "Riiona! It's a long shot, but I think we'd better call for reinforcements." The tiny Wishiwashi nodded and let out a cry, one that seemed to be drowned out by the sounds of battle erupting all around. But the sound carried over the wind and waves to the nearby ocean. And any Wishiwashi who heard it would answer the call. Snake could only hope they could hold out long enough for the school of reinforcements to arrive.
"We may have bigger problems than you realize," Trigger said. "What the hell is Bully doing?"
Snake looked over in surprise to see Bully approaching one of the zombies. He yelled a warning, but Bully ignored him, remaining transfixed on the lumbering creature before him. "Dweller, man, it's me!" Bully cried. "Snap out of it, bro! We're supposed to be best buds, remember?"
The Walkorpse cocked his head, listlessly staring at Bully with sunken eyes. Then without warning he lunged forward, tackling Bully to the ground
"Ow! Hey, knock it off! Look, I know we've had our disagreements in the past, you probably have every right to be angry with me, but can't we just talk it out? Violence isn't always the answer!"
Suddenly Zombie-Dweller flew off from atop Bully. He landed on the ground in a splatter of blood and guts, pinned by a giant boulder. Bully looked over at Trigger, whose Golem was still smoking from the Rock Blast.
"And sometimes violence is the answer," Trigger said, helping Bully to his feet. "I hate to break it to you, man, but I'm afraid Dweller's too far gone. There's nothing we can do now."
Bully's eyes widened as he saw Zombie-Dweller slowly drag himself to his feet. The creature locked eyes with Bully and emitted an unearthly groan. "Well, there is one thing we can do," Bully said, grabbing Trigger by the arm. "Run!"

IC - ?/? - Prosthetics Lab, Hau'oli City:
The pair turned to look at Ryan as he approached. With their uniforms covering the top half of their faces, whatever expressions they might have worn were inscrutable. What was not so much was them noticing Ryan's hand on his Poké Ball; the one in the back mimicked the move, not attacking but preparing to release their own Pokémon if needed. Strangely, the balls on their belt were blue in color, with lighter blue patterns around them almost in the shape of webbing, and four angular arches forming circular pairs around the exterior.
"We are performing a search in this area for three individuals," the other one said, his affect flat. He stepped toward Ryan, holding the pictures forward. Each showed a different individual; each individual matched the descriptions and images the team had been given of Elio, Selene, and Hau. "If you have any information on their whereabouts, it is imperative that we speak with them. If not, we will continue on our way."
IC - Kane/Esen Windred - Heahea City, Akala Island:
"I serve the Eater," Kane said. "And the Eater gives me power in turn."
The black pits where Kane's eyes should have been flashed, and the next moment a shroud of light fell on Lohe. The Signal Beams appeared to shimmer before arcing past and around the Instance, redirecting toward Lohe.
"You bested me once, child, when I was weak, hungry, unworthy of my own name," Kane continued. "You will not do so a second time."
A sound like a grandfather clock echoed through the area, its multitude of rhythmic gongs distorted. A dark wind rushed toward Ellen and Symbio, images of past regrets and grievances clawing at the edge of their vision as the attack threatened to strike--the Weight of Sin yearning to harm and slow at the same time.
Two flashes of light accompanied Esen as she released her Honchkrow and Gliscor. Immediately, the pair bristled with distain for the Instances around them, sensing their hostile intentions yet unsure of how to proceed against the new flood of enemies.
"Stay calm, boys," Esen said, as much to herself as to her Pokémon. "Organize, strategize, neutralize." She scanned the square, trying to determine the biggest threat. The large figure of the tank-like Drivedie caught her eye, its massive treads tearing at the ground underneath it with impunity as it launched a Magnet Bomb at a nearby store front. "Krow, grab that thing's attention with an Air Slash; Scor, follow it up with an Earthquake!"
The two Pokémon flew into action. As Krow ducked around the Drivedie, he gathered wind beneath his wings and sent it forth in a condensed blade that slammed into the Instance's back. It spun around, a powerful Flamethrower spewing from its arm cannon as it tracked Krow, though the Honchkrow had managed to maneuver out of range. From above, Scor dropped toward the ground, flipping and slamming his tail into the Drivedie's shoulder with such force that it shook the ground around them, throwing several of the Walkorpse off of their feet. As he rebounded back into the air, an Energy Ball from the naga-creature struck his side, throwing him off balance. The Instance slithered forward, electricity crackling at its fingertips as it aimed and launched an Electro Ball toward Krow . . .
A dozen or so figures watched the commotion from a nearby rooftop. Word of trouble in the heart of Heahea City traveled fast, and their vigilante hearts compelled them to act. But to find Instances in the midst, and a number of other fighters already pushing back--members of Team Skull, even!--well, that gave them confused and concern pause. One of their number crossed her arms as she observed the battle, her dark hair rustling in the wind.
"Yo, boss," one of her subordinates said, glancing aside at her from his position. "We goin' in or what?"
She did not immediately answer, instead sweeping her gaze over the resistance fighters. Several of the Skull grunts were retreating; typical. A few of the others in the group had engaged. The remaining had not jumped in yet, perhaps too shocked to act. At the moment, the carnage was contained to the square where it had begun; although there was a risk of it spreading outward, there was time before that happened. For now, however . . .
"Send a few down to keep an eye on the connecting streets--keep them boxed in this area as much as possible," she said. "We do not engage until we understand the depths of their hearts, the full extent of their courage." She held a fist forward, clenching it. A wild grin spread across her face as she raised her voice; they might have been too high to be heard on ground level, but it was exhilarating to shout to the heavens.. "So come on, you brave warriors! Prove your valor!"

IC: Evan Tierra
"And here I thought this world wouldn't be able to withstand the edginess of -two- Gavins!" Evan said, laughing as he prepared to send Gnip out. "Well, any enemy of my enemy is my friend!" As he was about to send Gnip out, Landorus appeared instead. "Please forgive me, but I must help my fellow spirit of the land." Landorus said pleadingly. Evan smiled and pointed towards the Instances. "Hey, I know everyone of my friends is as capable as Gnip, but before we get this party started..." Evan said as he brought out the Reveal Glass."Let's get you ready for the occasion, eh?"
In flash of light, Landorus had become a more feline shaped version of himself. Roaring, Landorus rushed into the fray, readying a Superpower infused tackle towards the Fragrins.

IC: Lohe Mahina - Heahea City
Lohe squeezed the Spyfly in his hands and held it up in front of him. It was an imperfect shield. The Signal Beam still streamed past the body of the Spyfly into Lohe. The burning light matching the pain of the sun on his vampiric skin. But the Signal Beam dazed the Spyfly, which was worth the pain. As the beam subsided and his skin repaired the damage done to it, Lohe tossed the Spyfly up into the air. With two swift strikes, Nosferatu tore through the defenseless Spyfly.
Lohe didn't have time to recognize Ellen. All he had time to process was that someone strong had come to reinforce them. He had to act quickly if there was to be any chance at saving anyone. He signaled to the flying bats.
“Save whoever’s left,” Lohe said. Nosferatu and Ruthven dove into the fray. Ruthven let out a Screech ahead of them to distract the Instances in front of them. Nosferatu slashed into a dazed Walkorpse to get it off of a person. He scooped the person up in his mouth, no time to check if the person still breathed let alone had a comfortable flight. Anything to get the bodies out of the way. Lohe pulled out Medusa’s Beast Ball as Nosferatu and Ruthven got to work. He hadn’t had the chance to properly bond with it yet. But with the sudden reduction of civilians meant he didn’t have to hold it back. He tossed the ball to the ground. Medusa emerged from the Beast Ball in a bad mood. It didn’t wait for orders. It just started spewing poison at the nearest Instance. Lohe pulled out his last Poke Ball. He tossed it backwards towards the retreating Skull Grunts. Mu came out of his PokéBall, confused about the situation. “Protect them,” Lohe said, not looking back towards Mu. If he was honest, he didn’t know what Mu could do. But Mu stood better odds surviving this with them, than with him, with what he was about to do. He ran towards the carnage with staff in hand, to help his bats save who they could. At the very least he knew he could survive Medusa’s Venoshock. Which was more than he could say for whatever civilians still remained. Mu looked between the Skull Grunts and Lohe, unsure what to do.

IC: Ryan Sanders - Prosthetics Lab, Hau’oli CityRyan peered at the pictures, keeping a wary eye on the strange people in his peripheral. He was surprised to recognize the pictures of Elio, Selene, and Hau. These were the three people he and the others in the Melemele group had been tasked with finding. Or rather, these were the three that were supposed to have some lead on Alola’s Legendary Pokémon Solgaleo and Lunala. Doing his best to mask his surprise, he turned his attention back to the nearest individual. A futuristic visor obscured their eyes, making it hard to make eye contact. Unsettling as they were, Ryan forced a pleasant smile. “Sorry,” he said, shaking his head. “No idea where they are.” It wasn’t a lie — while those three were supposed to live on Melemele Island, there was no guarantee that they were currently there. And since his group had made the prosthetics lab their first stop, they were actually no closer to finding the Trainers in question than when they’d left Vertrag that morning. He wasn’t sure why these strange people were looking for the Alolan Trainers, but he knew they Vorhut couldn’t afford any unnecessary obstacles right now. Studying what he could of the individuals’ faces, Ryan posed a question of his own. “What’s so important that you need to talk to them about?” IC: Ellen Burks (Mega Symbio)/Bully (Kino)/Trigger (Tokahiko)/Snake (Riiona) – Streets, Heahea CityIt all happened in an instant. Kane's wave of darkness seemed to target the very sky itself. The bright Alolan sun turned into a blood-red moon, the brilliant blue sky becoming dark and overcast in a matter of seconds. Ellen and Symbio looked around. Everyone else was still fighting, seemingly ignoring the chronic gongs of an unseen grandfather clock that drowned out all sounds of battle. Familiar voices sounded behind them. They turned around to see a bed, of all things, lying in the middle of the cobblestone path. One that looked exactly like Ellen's bed back in Village Bridge. But that wasn't nearly as shocking as the two people standing next to the bed, ignoring the battle around them. It was their mom and dad. As the grandfather clock's chimes faded into the background, Ellen and Symbio heard their parents' voices. "I can't believe it," their father was saying. "She's gone." "Did she say anything last night about doing some last minute shopping?" their mother asked, placing a hand on her husband's shoulder. Their dad shook his head. "She bought all her gifts yesterday. Besides, it's Christmas Day. All the shops in the village are closed. Where could she be?" Suddenly, Ellen and Symbio realized what this was. It was a memory of sorts, but not one either of them had witnessed. It was Christmas morning, after they had snuck out in the middle of the night to rejoin Sonja and the others at Dragonspiral Tower. Their cause had been a noble one: to save all of Unova. But the pain and anxiety they had forced upon their parents in the process . . . was it really worth it? "It wasn't." Ellen and Symbio looked up with a start. Their father was looking straight at them. "Your mother and I were devastated. Christmas is supposed to be the happiest day of the year. We were supposed to spend the morning together as a family, sharing in the love, peace, and joy of the season. Instead, we spend the day looking all over for you. How could you do this to us?" Ellen's knees buckled and Symbio's body wavered in the air. " I didn't mean to . . . I mean, we never wanted . . ." "What you're trying to say is, you didn't care." The distorted clock chimed once more. The human form of Tyler McKinley sat on the ledge of the fountain, taking in the battle around them with a smile one might expect from someone enjoying a pleasant summer day. "Not about Mom and Dad, anyway. No, there are much bigger and better things to worry about, aren't there? What do the feelings of a mere two people matter when the fate of the world is at stake? Isn't that right, Ellen?" Their father looked from McKinley to Ellen and Symbio, shock and betrayal marring his face. "Is that true?" he asked in a quiet voice as he fell to his knees. "Your mother and I brought you into this world. We provided a home for you; we raised you to be kind and sincere. I know you don't owe us anything in return, but do we really mean that little to you? Is that why you went off with him instead of coming home with me?" "Apparently so," McKinley commented, cocking his head to one side. "I mean, you and Mrs. Burks are having another baby aren't you? Congratulations, by the way. You should be due around the end of the year, right? That puts Mrs. Burks in her third trimester now? Sounds to me like the two of you could use all the help you can get. Wouldn't it be nice to have Big Sister around to help out, instead of worrying every day whether or not she's still alive? It's not good for a pregnant woman to have undue stress, you know." " W-wait a minute!" Ellen and Symbio cried out, turning to their father. " You gave us your blessing this time! You said we could go with Evan and Jenny! We thought it was alright!" "Was it, though?" McKinley got up from his seat on the fountain, stretched, and walked toward them. "Or did Daddy just know he couldn't stop you this time? You kind of proved your point when we met under Hoenn's Cycling Road, after all. And now you've subjected poor Mommy and Daddy to the loss of their daughter all over again. Well, you know what they say. Third time's the charm!" Now it was Ellen and Symbio's turn to look at their father with questioning eyes. " Is that true?" they asked, echoing his earlier question. The look their father gave them filled them with so much guilt it physically hurt. "I tried to stop you," he said. "I pleaded with you to stay. But in the end, you rejected your family." McKinley patted him on the back. "Oh, don't worry, Paul. Maybe Baby Burks will be less of a disappointment." *** Bully and Trigger were running for their lives. Not only had the sermon-area-turned-rap-arena now become a battlefield, but their former friend Dweller was chasing after them with the intent to eat their brains. At least, that's what they assumed the zombie-like remnant of their pal wanted to do. They certainly weren't going to stop and ask him, but it seemed like a fairly safe assumption. "Yo, when did our lives get so weird?" Trigger asked. "The day you were born," Bully shot back, chancing a glance behind them. Part of the battle had taken to the air, flashes of lightning populating the cloudless blue sky. "I'm serious," Trigger muttered, rolling his eyes at Bully's quip. "We had it pretty good, all things considered. Team Skull had banded together and aside from the occasional run-in with the cops or those nuts from Valor, Mystic, and Instinct, we had no trouble from anyone. Now we got monsters popping up left and right, devil-worshipping freaks, the dead rising from the grave, Rockruff and Torracats living together, mass hysteria!" Bully glanced at his Turtonator. "I'd say the day our Pokémon lost their powers is the day it all went to--" Bully swore as he tripped over himself and landed hard on the cobblestones. Trigger stopped running himself and turned around to look at his friend. They'd made it to the mouth of one of the side streets leading away from the main square. But Zombie-Dweller was right behind them, and bounded atop Bully in a flash. Their former friend raised a decaying arm, fingers twisted in a formation no normal human could replicate without breaking several bones. The zombie gave an unearthly screech the meaning of which was impossible to decipher. Was it a victory chant? A jabbing taunt? Or was the creature simply excited for its next meal? Either way, Trigger, Tokahiko, and Kino could only watch in frozen horror as Dweller prepared to eviscerate Bully. Suddenly, a mass of black fur slammed into Dweller, distracting him momentarily from Bully's delicious brain. Lohe's Alolan Rattata had joined the fray. The small creature squeaked indignantly at the Skull members and their Pokémon. Tokahiko and Kino glanced at each other and shrugged. Then the two of them lumbered into battle. The Alolan Golem fired off a blast of electricity, knocking Dweller aside and allowing Bully to scramble to relative safety. Then Kino shot a blast of fire, incinerating the zombie instantaneously. The acrid smell of burning flesh filled the street. "Is he dead?" Bully hesitantly asked. As if in response, Dweller picked up one of the many abandoned street vendor carts in the area and hurled it at Kino. The wooden cart quickly caught fire, but provided enough of a reprieve for the zombie to move out of the way. "More like undead," Trigger said. "Dude's persistent. Yo, Brattata! Ever fight an undead creature before? Any idea how to kill one?" *** Snake inwardly sighed. Bully and Trigger had run off to Arceus knew where. Some of the people who had come to help seemed useful, but the little girl's attack had been redirected to Lohe and how she and her Reuniclus seemed to be zoned out, staring at an interesting cobblestone on the ground or something. They paid no mind to the monsters all around them. Nor to the Ultra Beast Lohe had just unleashed on the enemies, which was attacking without discretion. "Monsters fighting monsters," Snake muttered. A revving sound to his left drew his attention. One of the monsters, some sort of robot sticking out of a tank like a mechanical centaur, was speeding towards him. Snake deftly jumped back as the monster drove by and skidded to a halt. It looked straight at him and prepared to charge again. Snake glanced at the horizon, where he saw a dark cloud rapidly approaching. He nodded to Riiona and raised an arm to the sky, twisting his hand i to some sort of gang sign. Then he pointed at the tank-like monster. It was a non-verbal command, one that Riiona understood perfectly. The tiny Wishiwashi cried out again, even as the tank spun its treads, threatening once more to flatten Snake under its massive metal body. For his part, Snake stood perfectly still, a smirk plastered on his face. The monster drew closer and closer, yet still he showed no signs of moving. Then, at the last possible moment, a massive blue wall formed in front of Snake, forcing the robot tank to swerve to the side. The monster skidded to a halt once more and turned around to face Snake a third time. Snake could have sworn the robot’s visual receptors widened in shock at the sight before it. The wall had shifted, coalescing into a perfect copy of the robot tank’s form, albeit blue instead of red, and made up of hundreds of tiny Wishiwashi instead of hundreds of mechanical parts. The mechanical monster revved its engine. The Wishiwashi tank hummed with the sound of countless tiny fish, mocking their enemy. “Monsters fighting monsters,” Snake jeered. “It’s about time these guys got a good look in the mirror.”

-==IC: Marie Homura - Park, Ecruteak City==-
The two sat in quiet for a while, until Marie glanced over again. "Do you have any warmer clothes? It's only going to get colder as the days go on..."
-==IC: Corey Bouchard - Reflection Cave, Poni Island==-
"Stone." Corey said after not too long of thinking about the riddle and looking at the tunnels. They pointed to the symbol above the tunnel on the right. "Remove two letters, you still have the word one. Pretty clever, honestly, gotta give them credit for this one." They flashed a grin to the other two briefly, then began to walk down the tunnel in question. "Makes me wonder if they're just gonna have the rest marked out like this; I definitely think Hayes is onto something with it being a way to easily find their own way, while making sure others who wouldn't get it... don't."
-==IC: Colleen Llyan - Prosthetics Lab, Hau'oli City==-
While Skye had spent time investigating physically, Colleen had taken the time to examine the aura of the inert Pokémon. Despite its immobile appearance, Colleen felt a spark somewhere, which was one of the only things stopping her from thinking the same as Skye about it possibly just being a well crafted machine... though much like everyone else, she didn't really have any further ideas on how to activate it. So instead, she kept silent, lost in thought until they reunited with Gavin. She grinned as Gavin's excitement permeated the air, and couldn't contain her surprise at how fluid the arm seemed to be. The trip to the lobby was different, however.
Huh? A puzzled look crossed Colleen's face as the group approached the lobby. These auras... Something felt off to her. They didn't feel wrong or twisted like an instance would, but there was a strange feeling nonetheless. "Hey, are you expecting anyone else today, Landon?" Colleen asked cautiously as the group continued moving.
-==IC: Ray Hakuda/Lucia Zyther - Heahea Outskirts, Akala Island==-
Ray returned the smile with a grin of his own as the two remaining trainers hopped onto the Togekiss that Ray quickly sent out. As good as Orihime was at flying, however, it was clear that Jaeda certainly had the upper hand. Orihime seemed a bit frustrated at that, and inhaled deeply as she tried to go faster. She closed her eyes and focused on thoughts, memories of the past, memories of battles where other combatants would suddenly move faster. Her eyes shot open as Lucia let out a shriek - a sudden burst of wind from behind the Togekiss suddenly propelled them forward at a quicker pace, allowing them to catch up to Kyle despite the head start; though the two trainers on the quick-moving Togekiss looked completely baffled at what had just occurred.
OOC: Orihime learned Tailwind!
-==IC: Jenny Hakuda - Ula'ula Island==-
"Another Gavin!" Jenny parroted with a grin as she grabbed two Poké Ball off her belt. "But this one's shiny." As she threw the spheres forward to send out her Litten and Krookodile, her face took on a serious look. "Tenlite, hold Fire Fang for anything that approaches, Sandlite, lock down the ones further to the back with Sand Tomb. If anything gets closer, smash it with some Foul Play."
OOC: Krookodile: Sand Tomb > Instances further away, Holding Foul Play as reaction Litten: Holding Fire Fang as reaction
-==IC: Chloe Hikari/Olivia Seaton/Zeraora - Heahea City, Akala Island==-
Zeraora danced from foe to foe like a bolt from the blue; the electric attacks at the very least did not seem to do much against the Glowerplant, but their Plasma Fists were able to knock away some of the Walkorpse that approached the civilians that Nosferatu was trying to rescue. The electric type didn't seem to have any sense of priority, however, as they simply turned their head from side to side in an attempt to find another foe to strike.
As the rest of of the group had charged into battle, Chloe had instead frozen upon sight of Kane. Unlike Ellen, she had not had any interactions with him back in Opelucid, however she certainly recognized him from the room that had formerly belonged to one of the Children of Ford. The sudden transformation shocked her even more; even as even the inanimate objects around them sprung to life. There was a flash of light beside her, but all she could focus on were thoughts of what this could mean.
"...loe!!" Chloe snapped back to focus as Olivia snapped her fingers in front of her. "Stop spacin' out, we need all the help we can get!"
"Ah! Right!" Chloe gasped as she fumbled for the Poké Ball that held her Gallade and threw it forward. Her breath caught in her throat as Ellen was caught in the middle of some sort of attack. She wasn't sure what had happened, but Ellen and Symbio seemed to have stopped in some sort of trance. Her face hardened as she clenched her fist.
Olivia's face turned grim as she followed Chloe's line of sight. "I see." Olivia said with a nod - but before any more could be said, Chloe took off toward Ellen in a reckless dash. Olivia bit her lip, but followed with Amethyst right behind her. She might not have been telepathic or wield aura powers, but right then she could sense the anger rolling off of Chloe - a sentiment that appeared to be echoed by Allie given that a rainbow light engulfed her as she dashed toward the transformed Kane as well.
"Don't you hurt Ellen!!" Chloe and Allie yelled out simultaneously as Allie's sword glowed brightly, a Sacred Sword prepared to strike out in justice for Ellen.

IC - Ethan Worth/? - Ula'ula Island:
With reinforcements, the Instances did not last very long. Seeing Jenny and Evan working on the last few stragglers, Ethan looked at their new friend with a big grin on his face. "So?" he said. "How'd we do?" The other trainer ignored him, instead whistling for his strange Pokémon and heading toward the tunnel further into the ruins. Ethan ran after him. "Whoa, hey, wait buddy! We're on the same side, clearly! Don'tcha want help?"
"No."
"You're blunt. I like it. Maybe I should put this another way." Ethan held up his badge. "I'm with Team Rocket. We're part of the group trying to make sure Alola's Legendary Pokémon are protected and able to assist with defending the region. Could you at least tell us what's up around here?"
The trainer sighed in annoyance. "For the love of . . . Instances are attacking Tapu Bulu. They're being led by some weird lady with electric powers. That enough info for you?"
"More than enough!" Ethan said happily. He turned, calling back to Jenny and Evan as the other trainer continued further in. "Hey guys! Sounds like there's a crazy lady here leading the Instances and going after Tapu Bulu! Let's finish clearing these ones up so we can go kick her ass!"
IC - Sonja Baron/Madison Hayes - Reflection Cave, Poni Island:
"Guess it's as good an answer as any," Sonja said, following after Corey. Hayes followed behind her in the back, keep an eye out.
As expected, the tunnel wound through, eventually opening up into another intersection. Like the previous one, each tunnel bore a symbol above it--to the right, a symbol like a rain drop; in the middle, a tree; to the left, an eye. In the center of a room, another riddle had been carved:
'Always in you, sometimes on you; if I surround you, I can kill you. What am I?'
"I feel like we can rule out the tree right off the bat," Sonja said. "Not sure what the eye is supposed to represent; Psychics, maybe? It seems like these symbols represent types, anyway. So could it be Water?"
IC - Landon Hall/Skye Hall/Gavin Braner/?/? - Prosthetics Lab, Hau'oli City:
"Uh . . . no?" Landon said, giving Colleen a perplexed look as they walked down the hallway. As they neared the door to the lobby, they all became aware of the multiple voices coming from beyond. One sounded like Ryan, but the others were not familiar. Landon frowned as he hurried forward, clearing his throat and making a bit of a bigger entrance than he might have done otherwise as he turned to the group, continuing a conversation that had not been ongoing. "So that's why it's very important that you--oh, hello there!"
He smiled brightly at the pair of individuals speaking with Ryan. Their expressionless visages did nothing to put the group at ease as Landon addressed them, stepping to the side to get behind the counter while Colleen, Skye, and Gavin stayed put.
Landon patted Kailea on the shoulder. "Auntie, would you mind going back and getting the room cleaned up?" he said. "I'll help out our guests here." The older woman gave him a thankful smile and nodded, moving past him and going into the back hallway.
The man shifted his eyes away from Ryan as he stepped closer to the desk. "Greetings," he said, his tone completely unchanged from his previous interactions. "We apologize for the intrusion. Have you seen these individuals?" He held up the pictures again. "This is a matter of utmost urgency."
Landon rubbed his chin with his fingers. "Nah, haven't seen them anywhere but on TV," he said. "Those guys're famous trainers 'round here, y'know? League champs." He rubbed the back of his head bashfully. "For better or worse we haven't had a reason to see them here. Guess that's probably a good thing, prosthetics and all."
"Understood. Thank you for your cooperation." The man clicked off the images, turning and gesturing for his fellow. "Please enjoy the rest of your day."
It was a few moments after the door closed behind them before anyone spoke up. "Interesting couple of peeps," Landon said. "Aren't y'all also looking for those three?"
"Who three?" Skye asked. "None of us saw their pictures, pal."
"Right," Landon said. "Elio, Selene, Hau--those three. Should be somewhere around here, but it sounds like you aren't the only ones looking anymore." He shrugged. "I wouldn't rush it but unless there's anything else on your minds, you might wanna head out."
IC - Kane/Esen Windred - Heahea City, Akala Island:
A dark aura surrounded Kane as flecks of energy drifted off of Ellen and Symbio and toward his utterly-still form. One got the impression that he would have closed his eyes and breathed in deeply, if there were eyes to be seen. Instead he tilted his head back, shifting his face to the heavens. Red streaks like blood shone wet and bright in the sun, as if fresh rivers flowed from the pits of Kane's eyes.
"Oh, how quickly bravado gives way to uncertainty," he said as the effects of his attack began to fade. "This is what you earn by being a hero, girl. Quit while you're ahead." As Kane's fingers spread wide, his aura extended into a cloud above him. A storm of Dark Pulses rained down, hurling toward Ellen and Symbio.
"Don't you hurt Ellen!!"
Kane's head shifted only slightly at the new challenge. With the barest twist of his wrist, he redirected the remainder of the Dark Pulses toward Chloe and Allie.
"Ellen!" Esen started toward the younger trainer, but was cut off as Krow swept by her, narrowly dodging out of the way of the Electro Ball that now slammed into an approaching Walkorpse. As the offending Instance slithered toward them again, Esen whistled. Scor swooped down, claw glowing as he zeroed in on the Electric-Type Instance. With a well-placed Guillotine, he managed to cut it down, its head rolling from its shoulders as its two parts dropped dead to the ground.
As her Pokémon rounded back to her side, Esen turned to face the crowd of Walkorpse. Despite her thorough practice in maintaining her cool under pressure, the ghastly sight gave her pause. The drained faces of men, women, and children alike stared blankly at her through dead eyes, their bodies mindlessly shambling toward her with clear intent to harm. Though it took them a moment to rise and right themselves, each moment they spent on their feet in proximity together only served to heighten the individual abilities of the Instances. If they didn't act soon, then these creatures could very quickly get out of hand.
"I'm sorry this happened to you," Esen said quietly, speaking to no one in particular as she pulled out her other two Poké Balls. Her Noivern and Swoobat materialized, both bristling and hissing at the sight before them. Her Gliscor swooped down to join her as well. Esen held a hand forward, digging through her memory for information on these things. "They're Poison-Types. Scor, localized Earthquake; get them off their feet. Noi, keep them down with Boomburst. Bat, finish them off with Psychic."
They put the plan into motion. Scor slammed into the ground in the middle of the horde, sending out reverberations that sent many of the walking corpses tumbling. Even with their undead nature, they were harmed by her Noivern's ultrasonic bursts, stunning them long enough for Bat to fly by and send out targeted waves of psionic energy. As her team worked the crowd, Esen forced herself to watch. The least she could do here was ensure that each of these poor civilians was put to rest.

IC: Yamamoto Aori – Park, Ecruteak CityAori thought hard for a long time. "I do not think so," she finally said. "It was hot when Yanagi-san and Hikari-san bought me more clothes. And Yanagi-san has not had much time for shopping lately." Her eyes drifted to back to the pond. "She says we have to save our money." IC: Ryan Sanders – Prosthetics Lab, Hau'oli CityAs soon as the mysterious individuals had left, Ryan clicked the button on the Pokéball his hand had been resting on. "Follow them," he muttered softly as his Mismagius materialized and quickly phased through the ceiling. He kept an eye on the door as Landon explained how the people had been searching for Elio, Selene, and Hau. "Yeah, that is who we're looking for," Ryan admitted, finally looking away from the door to meet Landon's eyes. "I told them pretty much the same thing you did – I don't know where they are. Still, it's definitely suspicious that someone else is looking for them at the same time we are. Something tells me they aren't just groupies. That's why I had Missy tail them." He glanced at Colleen, Gavin, and Skye. "Although I suppose we could also send a message back to base and see if we can get any intel on our mysterious new friends." IC: Ellen Burks (Mega Symbio)/Snake (Riiona - Schooling) – Streets, Heahea City"Oh, how quickly bravado gives way to uncertainty." Kane's voice cut through the dark fog. Even as Ellen and Symbio directed their attention to the monster on stage, they noticed the forms of McKinley and their father melting away like wisps of smoke from a blown out candle. Even the dark clouds obscuring the sky seemed to blow away, revealing the bright blue sky they'd seen previously. Only one portion of the sky remained dark: the spot directly above Kane. A cloud of pure darkness seemed to undulate above the monster, writhing with a movement that was eerily similar to Missing Zero's gelatinous body. "This is what you earn by being a hero, girl. Quit while you're ahead." Suddenly Ellen and Symbio found themselves assaulted by a shower of Dark Pulses. Trainer and Pokémon moved as best they could to avoid the blasts, but it was about as effective as dodging rain. Several of the pulses fell in their vicinity but most of them hit their marks. It was only when Chloe screamed that Ellen and Symbio felt some relief from the pain. They looked up in horror to see the Dark Pulses had been redirected toward Chloe. " Heroes . . . don't . . . quit!" Reaching out with one mind, Ellen and Symbio aimed to grab as many remaining Dark Pulses as the could with Telekinesis and throw them off their mark. It was sloppy work, and they couldn't reach every pulse. But it was enough to know that Chloe wouldn't take as much damage from an attack meant for them. In the end, you rejected your family.Their illusory father's words echoed in their mind. It was clear by now that they were free from the effects of Kane's mental attack, but they could not escape the implications the illusion had dragged up. Their mind faltered, allowing some of the stray Dark Pulses to reorient their trajectory toward Chloe. Was that truly how their parents felt? Were they really just not saying anything? This is what you earn by being a hero.It was one thing to give up a normal life, to sacrifice one's self for the greater good. It was another thing entirely to sacrifice one's entire family. If this was the true cost of being a hero . . . was it really worth it? Ellen and Symbio glared up at Kane, wondering if he might actually have a point. *** "Bring it on!" Snake laughed maniacally as two vehicles – one an alien mechanical monster, the other an amalgamation of thousand tiny fish – revved and taunted each other. The two tanks charged at each other simultaneously, each one taking a swipe at the other. But the Wishiwashi were able to maneuver away from the physical strike, while simultaneously firing blasts of water at their mechanical opponent. "Whoo!" Snake cheered as the two tanks skidded to a halt and repeated the process, eyeing each other and revving their engines. "Talk about monster trucks! Now we're getting to the action!" Evidently growing tired of the charade, the Missing Zero tank raised an arm and fired a Flash Cannon at the school. The equivalent arm on the Wishiwashi tank disintegrated, accompanied by the sound of hundreds of Wishiwashi splattering across the pavement. The tiny fish weakly flopped about, searching for a safe water source. "Geez, man, don't be such a foul sport!" Snake cried. "If that's how we're gonna play, Water Pulse that scrap heap!" The mass of Wishiwashi shifted to reform the broken arm into the shape of a cannon, from which it fired a massive blast of water. The mechanical robot was pushed back by the force of the attack, electricity crackling from its joints as it started to short circuit. "Yeah, that's what ya get, ya hunk 'o junk!" Snake shouted. "Don't'cha dunk on my funk, you whacked up cyperpunk!"

IC: Lohe Mahina - Heahea City
Mu could barely understand Trigger’s words, but he could understand the problem well enough. The undead monster they were fighting didn’t give up or fall unconscious the way Pokemon did. If he were bigger and had longer claws, he could rip it apart to prevent it from fighting. That was regrettably not an option.
Mu took a stance as he used Focus Energy. He watched the Walkorpse closely. The Walkorpse shambled closer to them before charging towards Trigger. The moment the Walkorpse lunged, Mu shot forward and hit the Walkorpse with Sucker Punch in its supporting shin. The Walkorpse tumbled to the ground, prompting Mu to engage in the oldest and noblest of Rattata fighting traditions: biting and tearing at them while they’re down.
Lohe and his two bats ducked in and out of the crowd getting what civilians were left out of the way. There weren’t many left. Between the natural speed of Nosferatu and Ruthven and the last wisps of Tailwind propelling Lohe forward, they proved too slippery for the Walkorpse to catch. But the final key were the lasers striking at various Instances coming from Medusa. As it shot each Instance it could, Lohe had an opportunity to rush in and grab a civilian.
Lohe and his team managed to get the last living civilian out of the crowd right as an Earthquake shook the crowd. A little close for Lohe’s comfort, but needs must. Ruthven dropped his payload as the other Noivern dropped a Boomburst. He hated fighting enough when he was the one dropping that intolerable sound. Another of his kind using it was a bomb to his ears. Lohe and Ruthven, though still of sensitive hearing, were less affected by the noise. A signal had gone out to them which told them to run, which kept the trio from the center of the blast radius when everything went down.
They had gotten civilians out of the fray, but they were no healers. They had to take down the boss for any of them to be safe. Lohe looked to the stage. He wanted to take Nosferatu with him and take a shot at Kane. But between the Nobuddy guarding him and the thrice-damned sun, it was a bad idea. Medusa, on the other hand, thought differently. With the way in front of it cleared, it glowed a faint pink before firing a Power Gem at Kane.
Realizing what it was about to do, Lohe threw together a hasty plan. Try to get the Nobuddy away from Kane and give Medusa the best chance it could have. Between their new allies, Nosferatu and Ruthven, bats currently ruled the skies. Lohe signaled to Ruthven and he called another Tailwind for the bats to take advantage of. He turned to Nosferatu and pointed to the Nobuddy on the leftmost side of the stage and said “Giga Drain.” Nosferatu let the air guide his wings, taking him at breakneck pace towards his target. Green tendrils extended from his body, reaching towards the Nobuddy to steal its lifeforce.

-==IC: Marie Homura - Park, Ecruteak City==-
"Right." Marie stood up and grinned at Aori. "In that case, I'll help out and get some clothes for you, how's that sound?"
-==IC: Colleen Llyan - Prosthetics Lab, Hau'oli City==-
"I agree about trying to get intel on them - something about them made me uneasy." Colleen added with a frown on her face. She wasn't about to complicate things, but something about the people just felt off to her; different. and their demeanor hadn't helped the feeling at all.
-==IC: Chloe Hikari/Olivia Seaton/Zeraora - Heahea City==-
Chloe's eyes narrowed as the Dark Pulses flew her way. The two weighed the options on the fly - Allie leaped back after she realized that reaching Kane before anyone could be hit was impossible; instead she channeled the energy that she was wrapping around her sword into a Protective barrier as she stepped in front of her trainer. The shield of light blocked the majority of the dark pulses, but one of the stray shots managed to reach past the shield and slammed into Chloe's shoulder. Chloe and Allie let out a synchronized gasp of pain, but Chloe kept focus on their target.
Dark, huh... Let's see if this works... Chloe thought as she fished out her Pokedex. She pointed the camera in the direction of Kane and hit scan.
***
As Esen and her team worked through their part of the crowd of Walkorpse, they would also see flashes of yellow light as the angered Zeraora joined forces to assist with the strategic dismantling of the undead. Once satisfied that Esen could handle the rest, Zeraora turned their attention to the Nobuddy that surrounded the evil preacher, and attempted to fling an Aura Sphere their way. To their shock, however, Zeraora watched as the Aura Sphere simply phased through them to find purchase in the floor of the stage itself - clearly that would not work either. They let out a growl of frustration and surrounded their fists in lightning once again as they ran up to handle things the old fashioned way.
***
"Ghost, ghost, ghost, if those damn Nobuddy could move..." Chloe muttered as a burst of wind from behind the group began to blow her hair around, obstructing her view every couple seconds. She looked up as their new electric friend slammed into the Nobuddy that had continually blocked the view of the Pokedex. "That works." Taking advantage of the momentary opening, Chloe scanned once again, finally getting a lock on Kane. She seemed surprised at the result, but nodded. She reached out to connect to her friends. "Instance name: Preech - Dark/Poison, use ground!"
Olivia slid to a stop next to Chloe as she received the telepathic message. "Rightie, well, guess I can show off some of my training to ya." Olivia grinned as she grabbed the Poke Ball that contained her Vibrava. She clenched her left hand and held her right out in front of her as her eyes glinted with confidence. "Stop holdin' back Jhen! It's showtime; evolve and show off your Earth Power!"
The Vibrava let out a happy chitter as he grinned despite the circumstances. A white glow enveloped him as he flew up into the air. Large wings let loose a flap as the white glow was dispersed from the newly evolved Flygon. An insectoid-like roar echoed through the area as the very ground under Kane and the Nobuddy slowly began to burst up with earthly power. As her teammate began to show off, Amethyst glanced around the targets on the stage, and decided to send out a Hypnosis toward the one furthest to the right.
"Chloe?" Olivia caught Chloe's attention as she ducked behind Allie's shield as well. "Why are we constantly fightin' things that disregard the concept of life and death?"
"You know? I'd love to know the answer to that too."
OOC: Species: Flygon Nickname: Jhen Gender: Male Trainer: Olivia Appearance: Wings are larger than normal. Personality: Energetic and excitable, Jhen loves a good fight, but is extremely friendly about it. He looks up to his senior in Pokemon battling, Gnip, and echoes her puppy energy. Ability: Levitate Specialty: Speed ++, Attack +, Special Attack + Known Moves: Sonic Boom, Sand Tomb, Bulldoze, Faint Attack, Dragonbreath, Rock Slide, Earthquake, Earth Power
Allie: Protect > Self
-==IC: Corey Bouchard - Reflection Cave, Poni Island==-
Corey nodded. "While psychic makes sense for that too in a way, I feel like water just is more of the answer that'd go with this? And like... yeah telekinesis exists, but I don't know if I'd describe that as "sometimes" on you, unlike what water can be. Let's give it a shot."
-==IC: Jenny Hakuda - Ula'ula Island==-
Jenny nodded as she looked back to her team. One of the remaining Fraygrins had gotten too close to her Litten - there was a patch of burning plant matter close to a writhing Fraygins that was being pinned down by the kitten and her Krookodile - the latter of which taking every second opportunity to kick the downed Instance. ... remind me not to anger them. She thought as she looked around the battlefield to see if there was anything else to focus her attention on before they headed to the main attraction.
